Principal Objective The Risk Analyst role combines hands-on ability and thought leadership focused on the development, configuration, and operation of Brookline Bancorp's credit risk management monitoring, analysis, and reporting programs. The role requires experience in commercial banking with demonstrated expertise in credit risk management principles, practical knowledge of commercial lending, and proficiency with data, systems, models, and reporting tools. A successful Risk Analyst will be solution driven, intellectually curious, self-starter, and proficient in accomplishing concurrent and diverse objectives with minimal direction. This individual must possess demonstrated analytical ability while consistently demonstrating a high degree flexibility, teamwork, efficiency, and commitment to excellence and continuous improvement. The analyst must work well in a matrix management organization. The analyst will have opportunities to provide guidance to other staff members and assume a leadership role for projects. The work products of this position are highly visible, and include production of analytical studies and material of a level and quality suitable for presentation to the Chief Credit Officer, Executive Management, and Board of Directors. This necessitates attention to detail and quality, and skill in anticipating and communicating information in the most effective, useful, and appropriate form for the audience. Principal Duties and Responsibilities
  • Analyze loan portfolio credit quality trends, concentrations, and other significant characteristics, particularly in correlation with external economic data and events.
  • Perform portfolio stress tests and other forecasting exercises in conjunction with the Bank's management of its portfolio and expected credit losses under a range of scenarios. Support the Allowance for Credit Losses (ACL) model framework through both quarterly execution of the models, performing model monitoring tests, and evaluation of key assumptions.
  • Support the Bank's portfolio monitoring programs to facilitate the identification and management of higher risk assets.
  • Prepare periodic and ad hoc portfolio risk reports; including credit quality trends, ACL, and portfolio sensitivity studies. Utilize query and report writing tools, or work with the Report Services group as appropriate, to generate reports; both standardized and custom designed.
  • Represent Credit Risk Management in collaboration with partner departments within the bank (e.g. Finance, Support Services, Commercial Lending, Compliance) and with the external constituents (e.g., auditors or service providers).
  • Other projects or assignments as necessary such as: implementation of new systems; development of additional credit risk management programs; sector risk reports, portfolio stress tests, M&A support; or representing Credit Risk Management in initiatives with other departments (Finance, Support Services, Commercial Lending, Compliance) or external constituents (auditors or service providers).
Job Specifications (Skills, Knowledge and Abilities Required)
  • A Bachelor's degree is required. A Master degree is preferred.
  • 2+ years of financial analysis or related credit work at a financial institution; preferably with experience in Credit Risk Management, Credit Administration, Lending, Loan Review, Loan Operations, or applicable relevant experience in Support Services, or Internal Audit.
  • Microsoft Excel or similar program (advanced user); Word and PowerPoint (intermediate user).
  • Familiarity with Jack Henry loan accounting system and SQL programming are a plus
  • Ability to think both conceptually and concretely
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Experience with project management and process design
  • Attention to detail and quality are essential
