Patient Assessment: RNs assess the overall health of patients before, during, and after dialysis treatments. This includes monitoring vital signs, reviewing medical histories, and ensuring that patients are physically and emotionally prepared for the procedure.
Dialysis Procedure: Registered Nurses are responsible for setting up and operating dialysis machines. They carefully monitor patients throughout the treatment, adjusting machine settings as needed and addressing any complications that may arise during the process.
Medication Administration: RNs administer medications as prescribed by physicians, including those needed to manage fluid balance and prevent complications related to dialysis.
Patient Education: Providing education to patients and their families is a significant aspect of the RN's role. This includes explaining the dialysis process, discussing dietary restrictions, and offering guidance on managing their health between treatments.
Collaboration with Healthcare Team: Registered Nurses working in dialysis collaborate with other healthcare professionals, such as nephrologists, dietitians, and social workers, to ensure comprehensive care for patients. They participate in care planning and contribute to the overall well-being of the individuals undergoing dialysis.
Monitoring and Documentation: RNs closely monitor patients for any signs of complications during or after dialysis. They maintain detailed and accurate medical records, documenting the patient's response to treatment, vital signs, and any changes in their condition.
Emergency Response: In the event of emergencies or unexpected complications, RNs in dialysis are trained to respond quickly and efficiently. This includes administering emergency medications, notifying physicians, and taking appropriate action to stabilize the patient.
