General Summary- The Medical-Surgical Nurse Educator is responsible for meeting the educational and development needs of nursing staff to ensure that nursing staff have knowledge and skills to provide high quality, competent care of patients and their families.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Supports the educational needs for assigned units including classroom, clinical experiences and learning technologies.
- Implements comprehensive education programs to meet the orientation and ongoing competency needs and professional development needs of the nursing staff, with specific focus for critical care units.
- Ensures all program/course revisions meet the Department of Nursing and regulatory expectations and standards. Adhere to national education practice standards and stays abreast of current research into nursing education practice. Programs are executed and revised based on adult learning principles, organizational and learning theory consistent with the organizations standards.
- Utilizes performance improvement processes/tools to evaluate education programs to provide consultation to enhance continuing education, professional development opportunities and mentorship opportunities.
- Provides leadership to preceptors and services as a role model through educational programs and ongoing coaching and mentoring.
- Serves as a facilitator to nurse residents and actively mentors and supports their growth in teh profession and clinical practice.
- Collaborate with other educators, administration, unit managers, clinical nurse specialists and staff to maximize educational opportunities and cost effective programs.
- Utilize research results, benchmarking and other scientific sources in the development of evidence based best nursing practice.
Education- Graduate from an accredited school of nursing required. A general understanding of nursing principles and practices as normally acquired through completion of a Bachelor's degree in Nursing. Masters degree in nursing or education preferred.
Work Experience- At least five (5) years of clinical experience required. At least one year adult teaching experience. Experience with developing and implementing education offerings based on needs assessments. Intermediate computer knowledge/experience with Microsoft office products. Must have organization and critical thinking skills and strong writing skills desired.
Certification/License- Current RN license in the State of Missouri or Compact State.
- BLS Certification required.
Mental/Physical Requirements- Considerable mental concentration required. Lifting up to 35 lbs., turning activities and nearly constant walking required. Standing, turning, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, twisting, and reaching.
Working Conditions- Potential exposure to infectious disease. Slight possibility of exposure to hostile persons. Minimal physical discomfort.
