Job Description:
OverviewUnder the direction of the Assistant Head Nurse, Nurse Manager and the Director of Nursing, the emergency department (ED) nurses utilize evidenced- based knowledge and the nursing process to provide patient-centered care to individuals with life threatening illnesses/trauma. Responsibilities
  • Emergency Department Nurses provide direct and individualized nursing care to patients based on the application of scientific nursing principles. In addition to general nursing care, responsibilities include (but are not limited to): Collects current symptoms, as well as a detailed patient history and then consults and coordinates with health care team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care plans; Identifies and documents initial observations and ongoing assessments of the patients' needs for emergency care, and assessment of the deteriorating patient; Performs triage, while considering both physical and psychosocial elements; Manages basic life support needs and stabilizes patients until the attending physician is available, based upon nursing standards and protocol.
  • Initiates corrective action whenever information from monitoring equipment shows adverse symptomatology.
  • Records patients' current vital signs.
  • Works in collaboration with the healthcare team during exams, diagnostic testing and treatments.
  • Prepares and administers (orally, subcutaneously, through an IV) and records prescribed medications.
  • Reports adverse reactions to medications or treatments in accordance with the policy regarding the administration of medications by a licensed registered nurse.
  • Provides IV therapy.
  • Provides wound and pressure injury care.
  • Provides basic, bedside care.
  • Selects and initiates applicable clinical pathways to stabilize the emergency department patients i.e. Sepsis, CHF, asthma, seizure pathways.
  • Establishes priorities for care in collaboration with multidisciplinary team and initiates follow-up as indicated to ensure timely provision of patient care and therapeutic modalities.
  • Interprets clinical data and notifies the appropriate member of the health care team regarding pertinent information.
  • Demonstrates competency in core and unit specific nursing
  • Interprets lethal arrhythmias and intervenes as per ACLS protocols.
  • Records all patients' medical information concisely, accurately in a timely manner in the EHR.
  • Utilizes principles of infection control in the delivery of care.
  • Calculate drug dosage, administering continuous medication infusion, and monitoring patients for effects of the medication.
  • Reports adverse reaction to medications or therapy in accordance with hospital policy.
  • Maintains competency and updates knowledge of standards of practice in the Emergency Department nursing scope of practice.
  • Ensures that all equipment is in working order and all needed supplies are available in work areas.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of medication dosages, calculations, frequency, and administration, monitoring for side-effects.
  • Reports any suspected abuse to the appropriate agencies.
  • Develops individualized are plan for each patient.
  • Teaches patients and significant others how to manage their illness/injury, by explaining: post-treatment home care needs, diet/nutrition/exercise programs, self-administration of medication and rehabilitation, as well as provides referrals to other healthcare professionals for follow-up treatment.
  • Displays professionalism while completing multiple urgent tasks in a timely manner
  • Records all care information concisely, accurately and completely, in a timely manner, in the appropriate format and on the appropriate forms.
  • Demonstrate competency in all areas of the Emergency Department.
  • Performs other position-related duties as assigned, depending on assigned area (i.e.) trauma, crash, pediatrics, area D, fast-tract, and triage.
QualificationsEducation:Internal & 1199 SEIU:
    • Graduate of accredited nursing program(s).
    • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing preferred.
Non 1199 SEIU Candidates:
    • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing or equivalent to BSN program.
    • Master's Degree in Nursing, preferred.
Experience:
  • Minimum two (2) years' experience in medical surgical, or intensive care or related experience.
Knowledge and Skills:
  • Critical thinking, math, and computer skills.
  • Works as a team player.
  • Demonstrates respect and professionalism in all interactions.
  • Excellent oral and communication skills.
  • Decision making and problem solving.
  • Able to read, write, see and hear English.
Licenses, Certifications:
  • Current NY State RN License required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) required.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) required.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) required.
  • Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) required.
  • Certified in Emergency Nursing (CEN) preferred.
  • Certified in Pediatric Emergency Nursing (CPEN) preferred.
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program Certification (NRP) preferred.
  • Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner (SAFE) preferred.
  • Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) preferred.
  • Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC) preferred.
Physical Requirements:
  • Physically demanding, high-stress environment requiring prolonged periods of standing, reaching, walking throughout the working day.
  • Position will be required to stoop, bend, lift, and carry items weighing up to 35 pounds for routine performance of essential functions.
  • An individual in this position may be exposed to: Adverse indoor environmental conditions, Blood borne pathogens, Blood and body fluids, Physical hazards (e.g., needle pricks, etc.), communicable diseases, chemical hazards, radiation, and repetitive motions.
  • Full range of body motion, able to lift up to 100 pounds, if necessary, to assist lifting and moving patients.
  • Manual and finger dexterity, as well as hand and eye coordination.
  • Corrected vision and hearing to within normal range.
  • Frequently sitting at desk working on computer.
  • Ability to flex working hours.
