Job Summary and Qualifications

The Infection Control Preventionist is a qualified individual with knowledge of CDC guidelines and definitions of hospital associated infections, TJC standards, federal and state regulations.

The Practitioner is responsible for the identification, investigation, reporting, prevention and control of hospital acquired infections among patients and personnel as well as responsible for assisting with in-service programs related to infection prevention and control.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of complete infection control/prevention process in the healthcare setting.

Conducts concurrent infection control surveillance utilizes targeted patient and employee surveillance indicators approved by the Therapeutics Committee, based on studies which identified areas for improvement of patient outcomes.

Demonstrates the ability to aggregate and analyze infection control data and present to appropriate audiences, including community awareness.

Demonstrates understanding of Standard and Isolation precautions as set forth by the CDC.

Attends continuing education programs and maintains current knowledge of all aspects of infection control. Stays abreast of changing infection control practices and presents plan for compliance in a timely manner.

Demonstrates knowledge of microbiology and modes of transmission of disease entities.

Demonstrates ability to teach principles and practical application of infection control to all levels of healthcare personnel.

Demonstrates ability to develop, review and revise infection control policies and procedures as indicated or at a minimum every 3 years.

Develops and implements a system for identifying, investigating, reporting and preventing the spread of hospital associated infections among patients of all ages and healthcare personnel.

Maintains accurate records of hospital associated infections among patients.

Review cultures and sensitivities reported by microbiology laboratory of patients and personnel to determine if infection is hospital associated in origin.

Ensures that measures for prevention of patient infections are in place relative to: IV therapy, indwelling catheters, surgical sites, etc.

Confers with staff nurses on all patient units on a regular basis to determine occurrence of hospital acquired infections.

Confers with medical and nursing staff to determine appropriate implementation of isolation precautions.

Investigates infections, especially those occurring above established thresholds and/or in clusters by patient units.

Initiates culture and sensitivity and/or appropriate isolation precautions as ordered by the physician chairman of the Infection Prevention Committee when indicated.

Reports environmental hazards and/or implements corrective action that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.

Assists with in-service education related to infection prevention and control through general orientation, nursing orientation and annual education.

Completes Notifiable Disease reports and forwards them to the Tennessee Department of Health in a timely and accurate manner.

Performs other duties as assigned

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

Current RN licensure in the State of Tennessee

Current BLS Certification upon hire

Minimum of 2 years experience in infection control practice in a hospital setting preferred

Certification by the Board of Practitioners of Infection Control and Epidemiology, preferred.

Bachelors in Nursing Preferred; Associates degree required
