Essential responsibilities include assuming responsibility for an assigned group of patients, documenting patient responses to nursing interventions, noting changes in physician orders, assisting physicians with examinations and minor diagnostic procedures, and monitoring physiological data. The RN is also responsible for administering medications, regulating intravenous infusions and blood products, delivering patient care, interacting with family members regarding care plans, informing patients and families of hospital procedures, making appropriate referrals, and delegating tasks to support staff. Additional skills required include knowledge of professional nursing theory and techniques, ability to plan and evaluate nursing services, and strong communication skills.
