The health system comprises three hospitals, an outpatient surgery center, a regional cancer center, rehabilitation centers, two long-term care residences, home care and hospice services, and 34 affiliate physician practicelocations. We provide both inpatient and outpatient medical services throughout Southwest Michigan.

Scope of Work

Generally spends approximately fifty percent of time as staff nurse responsible and accountable for the overall nursing care management of an assigned group of patients. Collaborates with the Nurse Leader and other members of the health care team to achieve optimal patient outcomes. Uses clinical judgment skills to diagnose and treat the patient's responses to actual or potential health conditions. Assesses, monitors, detects, plans, and takes appropriate action to prevent potential physiological complications associated with specific health problems and / or medical treatment.Generally spends fifty percent of time as a nurse educator and assesses, plans, implements and evaluates orientation, in-services, competencies, and continuing education programs within area of specialization. Promotes a model of continuous learning through participation in education, consultation, role modeling and research. Facilitates and supports learning opportunities for the organization and the community, with particular emphasis on programs that impact the entire organization, across team lines.

Essential Functions

  • Accountable for the assessment of educational needs and develops, implements, evaluates, and revises educational programs using principles of education and adult learning.
  • Facilitates orientation of new employees to work setting in area of specialty. Uses and evaluates appropriate resources and facilities to provide orientation/educational activities in a fiscally responsible manner. Assists in the development/implementation of performance improvement studies/data collection/analysis/action plan related to area of responsibility.
  • Provides support to patient care staff and the system through development and provision of in-services, continuing education offerings, competency assessment and validation.
  • Demonstrates a high standard of moral, ethical, and culturally sensitive behavior. Formulates decisions and actions based on ethical principles, using the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses to guide practice. Advocates for privacy, confidentiality and security of patient, staff and organizational data.
  • Maintains the documentation and record keeping system in compliance with educational, organizational and external agency requirements.
  • Assesses the overall needs of the patient/family and analyzes the assessment data to identify potential diagnoses or issues. Ensures that required documentation is performed in an accurate and timely manner. Initiates patient discharge planning at time of patient contact and facilitates a smooth transition to the next point of service/home.
  • Identifies expected outcomes/goals and develops and implements/coordinates an individualized plan of care that recommends strategies to achieve the outcomes in accordance with the ANA Standards of Practice. Evaluates patient and family educational needs and employs appropriate teaching strategies while continually evaluating progress toward achievement of goals/outcomes.
  • Engages in activities related to the professional role and seeks to continually advance knowledge and competence related to nursing practice while completing self and peer evaluation of nursing practice. Participates in ongoing improvement activities that contribute to quality patient care.

    Qualifications
    • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing - Required
    • Master's Degree Nursing Education or Adult Education - Preferred
    • 2 years of relevant experience Clinical experience related to area of focus - Required
    • Education and program development experience - Preferred
    • Registered Nurse (RN) in State of Michigan - Required upon hire
    • AHA or ARC Basic Life Support within 90 Days required

    • Specialty Certification within 1 year or
    • Board Cert Nursing Professional Development (BC-NPD) - ANCC American Nurses Credentialing Center within 1 Year
