Department Description: The Post-Surgical Care Unit (PSCU) is a 40 bed inpatient area that provides care along a continuum for pre and post-surgical adults and geriatric patients. Patients above the age of 14 may be admitted and are evaluated on a case-by-case basis to ensure the most appropriate care can be delivered. Decentralized cardiac monitoring is available for all 40 beds. Patient population includes orthopedic diagnosis (medical & surgical), neuro-medical or surgical, surgical spine and trauma. Surgical procedures may be related to wound care/plastic surgery, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, gynecologic, renal, thoracic, vascular, otolaryngeal, total joint replacements (with a robust joint program), fractures, and musculoskeletal injuries of upper/lower extremities. Joint Camp within unit: (a partial hallway) There are 11 beds that are designated to elective joint surgery patients during the week. We do overflow other patients to that area, but there are specific core RN's and established guidelines for patient placement and care of these patients.General Job Duties: Fast paced post-surgical unit that averages 10-15 admissions per day with the highest occurring on Day/PM. Occupancy of unit is 70% during the week with average length of stay 2 - 3 days (except joints). RN must have ability to multi task and prioritize patient care needs based on acuity and work as a team. Equipment Utilized In Department: Electronic Charting - EPIC, Pyxis medication dispensing system, API scheduling system, Vocera devices for communication, R5 badges for use with call light system with Hill-Rom, Rover's for medication scanning, & Kronos time keeping system. We are a no/minimal lift facility using many assistive devices.. Required Skills: A minimum of 3 years' experience, on a post-surgical floor, specializing in general surgery, orthopedic and neuro-spine is a must. Experience with chest tubes, VAC, epidural, PCA, Alaris IV, tube feeding, NG tubes, Hemovac, JP drains, orthopedic braces (TLSO/Jewitt), blood administration. Certification in Med/Surg. and/or Orthopedic is a plus. Required Licensure: WI License, BLS Unit Specific Training: 3 shifts with a Preceptor, then assigned a specific resource for next 3 shifts. Nurse to pt ratio: day/pm 1:4 or 5, nights 1:6 or 7 Dress Code: Medical uniforms are to be clean and pressed. Closed toe shoes.
