Position Summary

The Road Maintenance Worker II performs skilled and manual labor. The Road Maintenance Worker II works on a crew engaged in the maintenance and repair of county roads, bridges, right of way, street signs and other assigned structures; and operates a wide variety of light and heavy construction equipment such as dump trucks, water trucks, pickup trucks, mowers, backhoes, bulldozers, chippers excavators, boom axes, rollers, and graders.

Essential Responsibilities and Functions

  • Performs a combination of skilled equipment operation and manual labor to build, maintain and repair county roads, streets, bridges, related structures and right of way.
  • Operates a variety of light and heavy construction equipment including dump trucks, water trucks, pickup trucks, mixers, tractors, mowers, cement and asphalt cutters, backhoes, bulldozers, chippers, excavators, boom axes, rollers, graders, hand and power tools, pipe wrenches, chainsaws and pick axes.
  • Performs manual labor to include patching potholes, sweeping, clearing and removing trash and debris from county right of way and hauling refuse for deposit at specified locations.
  • Cuts brush, trees, grass and other growth at roadsides, utilizing power equipment such as mowers, tractors and chain saws.
  • Erects, maintains and repairs street signs and other traffic markings. Attaches road signs to posts using various hand and power tools; digs holes and sets signs with cement.
  • Picks up and transports materials, tools and supplies.
  • Cleans, washes and maintains equipment and tools; checks equipment for proper function and damage before and after use to ensure safe operating conditions.
  • Performs preventative maintenance and minor repairs on tools, equipment and vehicles including: checking/changing oil, tires and water, refueling, greasing, and changing filters. Notifies supervisor of needed replacements and repairs.
  • Performs traffic monitoring and control including the distribution of barricades, warning signs, and safety cones and directing or flagging of vehicles around project/work site to ensure safety of crew and the traveling public.
  • Operates equipment in fighting wildfires.
  • Performs flood control duties as required.
  • Follows safety practices and wears protective gear.
  • Regular attendance is required.
  • Any duty as assigned by supervisor within the scope of the department
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    • Knowledge of light and heavy equipment and its operation.
    • Skilled in the operation and control of equipment, machinery, tools and/or materials requiring complex and/or rapid adjustments.
    • Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form. Involves semi-routine standardized work.
    • Ability to exert physical effort to meet the demands of the task.
    • Ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, texture and visual cues or signals.
    • Ability to communicate orally.
    • Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, noise extremes, machinery vibrations, or traffic hazards.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • High school diploma or GED
    • Six (6) months of experience operating light and heavy equipment; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
    • Must possess and maintain a valid Texas Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) including appropriate endorsement(s).

    Work Schedule / Hours

    Normal / Regular schedule is: Monday - Friday 7:30a to 3:30p*

    Summer schedule is: Monday - Thursday 6:00a to 4:00p (Mid May to Mid September)*

    *With 15 minute in place lunch breaks

    Overtime work is: As needed
