Salary: $15.75 HourlyLocation : GA 30721, GAJob Type: Full TimeJob Number: 01525Department: Public WorksDivision: Public WorksOpening Date: 10/30/2024Description PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATIONThe purpose of this classification is to perform manual work associated with projects within the Public Works Department. This job will primarily consist of flagging traffic and assisting with traffic control functions during construction or maintenance that takes place along or within the right away of county roads.*OPEN UNTIL FILLED* Examples of Duties ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSThe following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
  • Assists with constructing, maintaining, and repairing county roads, rights-of-way, bridges,
ditches and drainage systems.
  • Installs drainage pipes.
  • Assists with traffic control at work sites; flags traffic through work sites; sets up safety cones,
  • barricades, barrels, and signs; assists in maneuvering equipment within work sites.
  • Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure the safety of other employees and the public.
  • If operational tempo dictates the employee may be asked to operate or assist with other projects
located both on and off of the right of way. This may include the operation of a variety of light equipment, machinery, and tools as necessary to support essential functions, which may include Turf Mowers (both push and ride), Wood Chipper, High Pressure Pipe Jetter, both Base and/or Asphalt Rollers, Skid Steer, Motorized Broom.
  • Locates underground utilities.
  • Assists in driveway maintenance.
  • Operates a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Assists in the design, construction, and installation of street signs; assists with traffic counts; assists in maintaining sign inventory.
  • Assists with the establishment and lay-out of construction projects.
  • Flags traffic at work sites.
  • Cleans out culverts.
  • Cleans up storm damage.
  • Collects litter and debris for right-of-way.
  • Performs minor routine maintenance tasks necessary to keep vehicles, equipment, and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, refueling vehicles, checking fluid levels, replacing fluids, greasing equipment, replacing parts, washing or cleaning equipment, or cleaning shop or work areas; checking air, tires, blades, belts, hoses, and lubrication. Monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment.
  • Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.

  • Knowledge of the geography of the county, including roads and landmarks.
  • Knowledge of road maintenance and repair principles.
  • Knowledge of department safety guidelines.
  • Knowledge of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Knowledge of mathematics.
  • Skill in the operation and maintenance of a variety of road maintenance equipment.
  • Skill in the operation of hand and power tools.
  • Skill in research and in preparing reports.
Typical Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSHigh school diploma or GED; training in flagging traffic; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver's license.
