Position InformationTxDOT's Bryan District is looking for a General Transportation Tech I or II (Roadway Maintenance) based in Walker Co., TX. This position will perform routine work related to transportation activities such as roadway maintenance and repair, light and heavy equipment operation, preventive and minor maintenance on equipment, traffic control, assisting the public during emergency situations.
  • Driving a state vehicle is required to perform the essential functions of this job.

Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.Essential Duties: The essential duties for all levels of this job include:General Transportation Tech I & II:
  • Assists in identifying, repairing and installing signs, delineators, mail box supports and posts; performs basic welding as needed; as required uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products related to these activities.
  • Assists in providing support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites; assists stranded motorists as required.
  • Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic.
  • Determines placement of traffic control devices and installs/moves devices.
  • Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
  • Drives to move/pick up litter and roadway debris.
  • Operates light equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a quarter cubic yards or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper and mower.
  • Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment and completes various required reports including time-keeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms and PMI.
  • Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, helps the public and performs other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents and hazardous material spills.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Additional Duties for a General Transportation Tech II include:
  • Assists in inspecting traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications for devices; safety laws, rules, regulations and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Operates heavy equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a half cubic yards or more, tractor-trailer haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint striper and dump truck.
Experience:General Transportation Tech I: NoneGeneral Transportation Tech II : 1 year transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent). Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis . Substitutions for Minimum QualificationsLicenses and Certifications:
  • Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Must have a Commercial Class A Driver's License or have obtained a CDL A License, within 120 calendar days from date of employment.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Commercial Driver's License
Competencies:The required competencies for all levels for this job include: General Transportation Technician I & II:

  • Methods, procedures, equipment and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work
  • Materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance

Additional competencies for General Transportation Technician II include:
  • Basic vehicle mechanics, maintenance and repair procedures
  • The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
  • Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals
  • Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
  • Standing-prolonged periods of time
  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
  • Climbing - ascending/descending ladders, stairs, scaffoldings, ramps, etc.
  • Balancing-walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling
  • Stooping-bending body downward and forward by bending spine at waist
  • Kneeling-bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee(s)
  • Crouching-bending body downward and forward by bending leg(s) and spine
  • Reaching-extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction

  • Must be able to report for duty on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
