SUMMARY:
Performs a variety of manual labor tasks related to the construction, cleanliness, maintenance and repair of the county's roads and bridges.
The employee is required to be on duty before, during, and after natural disasters and emergencies, as directed by the supervisor.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Performs general road maintenance, which includes patching roads, laying hot or cold asphalt mix, and repairing driveway approaches.
Performs manual labor including mixing and laying concrete, cutting brush, mowing grass, patching roads, cleaning drains and ditches, erecting or repairing fences and barricades, installing culverts, installing and painting signs, repairing and installing guard rails, drilling and cutting posts on bridges, and working as a flag man at job sites.
Operates small equipment and tools which include mowers, cutting torch, electric saw, electric drill, grease gun, hydraulic auger, winch and post-hole digger.
OTHER DUTIES:
May load and unload material and supplies.
May drive trucks engaged in hauling gravel, supplies, equipment, etc.
May operate a tractor mower, pneumatic roller, sweeper, front-end loader, and backhoe.
May assist with carpentry work, plumbing work, or sign making.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Less than high school education; High school diploma or GED certificate preferred but not required.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Valid Texas Motor Vehicle Operator's License (B or C, depending on position)

Ability to follow oral instructions.
Ability to work under close supervision.
Ability to learn to use power or hand operated tools.
Ability to perform strenuous work in the outdoors.
Ability to establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with other employees, officials, and the general public.
