The Superintendent invites qualified and interested persons to apply for the position of Roofer within the Office of Project Control.
This title is governed by the New Jersey Civil Service Commission; meaning that a candidate for the position will be placed as a provisional employee. At a later date the candidate will be required to take an examination administered by the Civil Service Commission. Candidates must score and rank high enough on this examination in order to remain in the position as a permanent employee.
DEFINITION: Under direction, performs all general roofing work involved in the maintenance, construction, repair, and installation of roofs of varied composition. Lays all kinds of commercial composition for the surfacing of roofs; works with various machines and hand tools common to the roofing trade. May prepare or work from sketches, plans and specifications in accordance with the building code and accepted trade practices; does other related duties.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
1. Graduation from High School or Vocational School or possession of an approved High School Equivalent Certificate.
2. Three (3) years of experience in roofing work involving a variety of tasks in asphalt, and/or asbestos shingle, and/or tar, and/or composition, and/or general roofing work.
3. Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Cuts roofing papers, asphalt shingles, and other roofing materials to fit roof corners, pipes, and other objects on to roof.
2. Works with machines and hand tools common to roofing trade.
3. Fastens composition to roof base, using nails or asphalt cement.
4. Paints overlapping joints with asphalt to seal them.
5. Cements or nails flashing to side-walls.
6. Repairs copper and cloth flashing, scuttle doors, vent and drain pipes.
7. Spreads asphalt over roof with mop, and spreads pebbles over asphalt with a rake.
8. Applies alternate layers of roofing paper and hot tar, and surface layer of gravel to build up a roof surface.
9. May prepare roof work from sketches, plans, and specifications in accordance with the building code or approved trade practices.
10. Erects working scaffold.
11. Prepares time and material estimates.
12. Inspects roofs, flashing and gutters to determine their condition, determines the nature of the repairs and completes the required repairs.
13. Provides assignments to helpers.
14. Keeps records and files.
15. Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
16. Perform other duties and tasks assigned by supervisor.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
1. Knowledge of the problems involved in inspecting roofs to determine their condition and the nature of repairs.
2. Knowledge of the standard tools, materials, methods, practices, occupational hazards and safety precautions.
3. Knowledge of construction and repair of built-up roofing, both asphalt and coal tar pitch.
4. Knowledge of the installation and repair of roofing systems.
5. Ability to use instruments to inspect the conditions of roofs.
6. Ability to work from plans, specifications and sketches.
7. Ability to take needed safety precautions in performing the work.
8. Ability to obtain, store, safeguard, distribute, and properly use needed equipment, materials, and supplies.
9. Ability to provide work assignments.
10. Ability to maintain records and files.
11. Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
12. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.

SALARY, EMPLOYMENT PERIOD AND UNION AFFILIATION
1. Salary: $107,650 (salary for SY 2024-2025)
2. Employment Period: Twelve (12) Months
3. Union Affiliation: Building Trades Council
