Overview:

Utah State Universitys dedicated and compassionate Sexual Assault and Anti-Violence Information (SAAVI) Victim Advocate (Victim Advocate) is housed within the Division of Student Affairs. This full-time position is crucial for providing confidential and comprehensive support and advocacy to students dealing with interpersonal violence.

Responsibilities:

Case Management and Support:

  • Assess students resource needs, identify barriers, and facilitate access to necessary support services.
  • Evaluate risk to students and implement intervention plans to ensure their safety and success.
  • Document interactions clearly and maintain accurate case records.
  • Build and maintain collaborative relationships with university staff and external agencies to support students effectively.

Direct Services and Advocacy:

  • Assess and address the needs of crime victims and students facing significant challenges.
  • Provide crisis intervention, emotional support, and essential information about university and community resources.
  • Coordinate with campus and community partners to ensure comprehensive support services are delivered.
  • Assist victims in navigating the criminal justice system, including filing for state compensation and supporting court processes.
  • Support students through Title IX or legal processes, including attending hearings and providing advocacy.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Maintain accurate and confidential case documentation in compliance with relevant laws (e.g., Clery Act, Utah Code).
  • Compile and report necessary information related to victim and student cases.

Collaboration and Training:

  • Develop and deliver training to campus police and other university staff on issues related to victims and survivors.
  • Collaborate with university departments and community agencies to build effective support protocols and prevention strategies.
  • Participate in community and campus coalition meetings, outreach efforts, and educational events.

Managing and Administrative Duties:

  • Monitor and gather feedback to improve advocacy programs and services.
  • Develop and implement policies and protocols to enhance the well-being of victims and students.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in a related field (e.g., Social Work, Higher Education Administration, Counseling, Communication, etc.), OR an equivalent combination of education and experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in a related field (e.g., Social Work, Higher Education Administration, Counseling, Communication, etc.)
  • Experience working with individuals with mental health concerns or experiencing thoughts of suicide.
  • Knowledge of Title IX, FERPA, HIPAA, and current legal issues in higher education.
  • Knowledge of mental health and wellness issues in college student population.
  • Knowledge of violence risk assessment or threat assessment, risk management and violence prevention strategies and approaches and how to apply them in a university setting.
  • Knowledge of student development theory and problems/issues typically encountered by college students.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • General computer knowledge (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher).
  • Knowledge of information gathering methods and procedures.
  • Ability to make administrative/procedural decisions and judgments.
  • Skilled in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential data and personal information.
  • Skilled at records maintenance.
  • Ability to interact with students, faculty and/or staff in a team environment.
  • Ability to gather and analyze statistical data and generate reports.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication (oral and written communication) skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage crisis situations and/or training in de-escalation techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a variety of student populations and concerns.
