Job Description:
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Conducts safety meetings and safety training classes for all departments.
  • Performs job inspections and observations for safe work practices and procedures and proper equipment, tools and materials to promote and ensure a safe working environment.
  • Develops and recommends new procedures and approaches to safety based on reports of incidents, accidents, and other data gathered from various sources.
  • Disseminates information to managers, supervisors, and employees regarding toxic substances, hazards, and other safety information.
  • Assists managers and supervisors in enforcing safety policies and procedures.
  • Measures and evaluates effectiveness of safety program, using established goals.
  • Initiates commendations for safety performances or suggestions by employees, as well as recommendations for disciplinary actions for infractions of safety rules or safe working practices.
  • Coordinates and maintains personal protective equipment and testing program, first-aid kit supplies, and other related supplies and programs, performing appropriate audits/reviews.
  • Investigates and makes necessary reports involving vehicle accidents, work related incidents, and personal and public liability accidents in coordination with appropriate management and departmental personnel.
  • Keeps abreast of all regulations and laws pertaining to safety and loss control as set forth by the governing agencies, including National Electric Safety Code specifications and OSHA requirements.
  • Develops, recommends, implements and maintains the Cooperative's safety policies and procedures manual.
  • Ensures appropriate and required documentation is maintained in accordance with OSHA and other federal, state and applicable laws, procedures and policies.
  • Responsible for the coordination of the Cooperative's safety accreditation program.
  • Prepares and disseminates memos and reports.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of Fiber Safety
  • Knowledge of effective safety coordination practices, including effective accident investigation.
  • Knowledge of OSHA rules and regulations, DOT regulations, the National Electric Safety Code and National Electric Code.
  • Knowledge of and the ability to effectively teach and administer various safety related training courses.
  • Functional knowledge of Texas Workers' Compensation Act and other related employment laws.
  • Knowledge of emergency preparedness and response.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish and maintain professional working relationships with internal and external customers.
  • Proficient in the use of computers and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to organize workload, establish priorities and meet established deadlines.
  • Ability to use initiative and independent judgment with established guidelines.
  • Ability to effectively and professionally communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to make effective presentations to groups through training and education classes and/or meetings, etc.
  • Ability to anticipate, identify potentially hazardous conditions, identify causative factors and make recommended changes in compliance with occupational safety and health standards.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism and composure in extremely stressful and sensitive situations.
  • Ability to read and comprehend.
  • Ability to interpret maps and/or staking sheets.
  • Ability to prepare clear, concise and complete reports, correspondence and other written materials.
  • Ability to maintaining the confidentiality of information.
  • Ability to provide management with sound, positive advice and information concerning area(s) of responsibility.
  • Ability to multi-task and work in a high-energy, fast paced environment, with changing demands and priorities.
  • Ability to respond immediately to 24-hour call out and work as needed, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
