Safety OfficerBasic FunctionThis position coordinates all aspects of the safety & health program at MRIGlobal's Charlottesville, VA facility. Serves as Safety Officer and Chemical Hygiene Officer in accordance with OSHA regulations, as well as the Biosafety Officer in accordance with CDC/USDA regulations. Assists management and staff in the development and implementation of safety and health procedures and policies.Nature and ScopeThe Safety Officer reports directly to the Director, Environment, Health, and Office. Primary duties include project review, safety training, facility reviews, and advising management and staff on safety matters. Serves as a resource on safety and environmental matters to ensure a safe and healthy working environment. Keeps abreast of current federal, state, and municipal regulations as they apply to occupational safety and the environment.Essential FunctionsEnsure the facilities comply with applicable OSHA, EPA, CDC, DOD, USDA, other Federal, state, and local regulations.Updates and modifies safety-related procedures manuals, as necessary.Perform site/laboratory inspections to assess compliance with safety and health program requirements.Ensures that safety-related equipment is inspected and/or certified as appropriate.Provides safety training to technical staff, visitors, and contractors.Conducts job safety analysis and hazard surveys in laboratories.Coordinates the daily functions of the hazardous waste program and ensure compliance with applicable local, state, and federal regulations.Coordinates the cleanup of spilled hazardous materials according to the OSHA laboratory standard and EPA RCRA regulations.Coordinates the respiratory protection program.Provides Quality Assurance support to project(s).Success FactorsPossess interpersonal skills to work in a team-based environment.Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to work with office staff, researchers, facilities design and maintenance personnel, laboratory technical staff, outside contractors, and government agencies.Working knowledge of applicable OSHA, EPA, CDC, DOD, USDA, other Federal, state, and local regulations.Ability to obtain U.S. Government security clearances.Working knowledge of ISO 9001 and ISO 17025 a plus.Minimum QualificationsBachelor's degree (B.S/B.A.) from four-year college or university in Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Health or related science field; or equivalent combination of education and experience with a minimum of 2 years' experience in R&D safety in the laboratory environment.Preferred QualificationsOccupational, Environment, Health, and Safety certification(s) a plus (e.g. CIH, CSP).Work experience and knowledge of laboratory safety; chemical, pharmaceutical, and/or Process Safety Management (PSM)/Risk Management Program (RMP) industries a plus.#J-18808-Ljbffr
