Job Description:

Overview:

The Safety Nurse specializing in chemotherapy mixing is responsible for the safe preparation, handling, and administration of all IV infusion drugs. This role requires a high level of expertise in oncology nursing, meticulous attention to detail, and a strong commitment to patient safety and adherence to regulatory standards. The position is Monday Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM ET. Additionally, our practice observes several paid holidays and provides a competitive benefits package (see below).

Responsibilities:
  • Serves on the Pharmacy & Therapeutics(P&T) Committee
  • Works with the Pharmacist to keep Pharmacy policies and procedures current.
  • Follows OSHA guidelines when handling cytotoxic agents, biohazardous waste and any other material potentially infected with a blood borne pathogen.
  • Participates in professional development activities and maintains professional affiliations.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality.
  • Mixes chemotherapy, hydration and other medications under the direction and supervision of a physician.
  • Facilitates dose modification by consulting with the nurse charged with the patient, assessing labs, consulting protocol or treatment plan, calculating dose and consulting physician regarding dosage modifications, problems, and symptoms management.
  • Reviews all chemotherapy orders prior to dispensing to ensure completeness and accuracy.
  • Confirm the regimen is consistent with currently accepted medical practice as evidenced by safety and efficacy data published in peer reviewed medical literature.
  • Completes and confirms admixture and administration directions on all labels.
  • Confirm BSA calculation based on height and weight.
  • Verifies accuracy of admixture performed by technicians.
  • Serve as Practice-wide resource for chemotherapy safety issues.
  • Assists in daily pharmacy operations as needed/assigned.
  • Demonstrates positive interpersonal relations in dealing with fellow employees, supervisors, other department employees, and physicians so that productivity and positive employee relations are maximized.
Qualifications:
  • Registered nurse with at least two years of oncology-related experience.
  • Graduate from an accredited program for professional nursing education required; BSN preferred.
  • Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) status preferred.
  • Current RN Virginia License required.
  • Current BCLS certification required.
