Why We Need You
The Safety Specialist at Apex Underground supports the organization in achieving operational efficiency goals by assisting with safety and quality initiatives. This position reports the EHS Manager. This position also requires collaborating directly with field operations teams and line management to implement and streamline safety and quality initiatives. This is a field-intensive role with limited time in the office for preparing reports, identifying trends based on field audits, conducting incident investigations, and analyzing related leading and lagging indicators.
Your Regular Responsibilities
Safety Training and Education
- Assist in developing and delivering safety training programs, ensuring all employees are knowledgeable about safety procedures, equipment use, and emergency protocols.
- Conduct toolbox talks and site-specific safety orientations for new hires to establish safety expectations from the start.
- Provide ongoing safety training sessions to reinforce safe practices and keep employees updated on regulatory changes.
- Work closely with the EHS Manager to develop, implement, and enhance the EHS program by incorporating essential data into the safety platform, ensuring compliance with environmental, health, and safety regulations.
Job Site Inspections and Audits
- Perform regular safety inspections to identify unsafe conditions, behaviors, and equipment, ensuring compliance with safety regulations.
- Collect and analyze audit and inspection data to identify trends, underlying causes, and potential corrective actions.
- Coordinate with the Safety Manager and Field Operations leadership to recommend, implement, track corrective actions.
Incident Investigation and Reporting
- Assist in investigating accidents, near-misses, and reported safety concerns, determining root causes, and recommending preventative measures.
- Work with the EHS Manager to analyze incident data, identify trends, and develop strategies for continuous improvement in safety practices.
Regulatory Compliance and Documentation
- Stay up-to-date with changes in OSHA regulations, local safety codes, and industry standards, ensuring ongoing compliance across job sites.
- Assist in maintaining safety documentation, including training records, inspection logs, and incident reports, ensuring records are accurate and accessible for audits.
- Coordinate with the EHS Manager to prepare for and participate in OSHA site visits and other regulatory inspections.
Promote a Safety-First Culture
- Act as a safety resource for all employees, providing guidance and support in understanding safety protocols and best practices.
- Foster a positive safety culture by encouraging open communication about safety concerns and actively participating in safety meetings.
- Recognize and commend safe behavior on job sites, reinforcing the company's commitment to maintaining a safe working environment.
- Collaborate with all Apex teams to ensure 100% safety, quality, and productivity by eliminating injuries and quality issues, while verifying crews meet Apex expectations.
Your Team for Collaboration & Support
You will report directly to the EHS Manager and collaborate closely with project managers, site supervisors, and field crews. You will support the EHS Manager in maintaining a safe work environment and work alongside all employees to promote a culture of safety.

Technical Requirements
- Education: Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Construction Management, or a related field preferred.
- Certifications: Relevant certifications such as OSHA 30-hour, First Aid/CPR, or SSH are highly desirable.
- Experience: 3-5 years of experience in a safety role, preferably within the construction industry. Proven experience conducting safety training and site inspections.
- Skills: Proficiency in using safety management software and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Licenses: Valid driver's license and satisfactory MVR.
