Description GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION This is skilled work in the operation and maintenance of refuse collection trucks including heavy manual labor involved in the collection and disposal of garbage, trash and yard waste. Examples of Duties ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Safely collects garbage, trash and yard waste from residences and small businesses on an assigned route. Assists in unloading the truck at disposal area as needed. Adverse weather conditions are involved and must be able to lift 50 pounds of trash approximately four feet high to empty barrel of garbage into the garbage truck. Must have manual dexterity to use rakes and pitch forks to load trash into the truck. Safely drives and operates refuse truck performing F.D.O.T. inspection and ensuring vehicle is fueled and equipped with tools needed to complete their assigned route. Must have agility to climb in and out of the truck continuously throughout the day. Assists in the cleaning and maintenance of assigned vehicle and reports any problems to supervisor. Climbs into a small compartment behind packer blade to remove refuse. Accesses platform 5' above ground to complete cleaning of vehicle. Responds and solves complaints assigned by dispatcher or supervisor. Makes special runs in attending to garbage, trash or yard waste complaints. Responsible for the cleaning and maintenance of equipment such as barrels and buggies that are used on a daily basis. Assists in the maintenance of the wash rack. Perform any other related duties as required or assigned. Minimum Qualifications EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Minimum of six months experience in heavy manual labor or previous sanitation background required. Six months experience in driving and operating a refuse vehicle preferred. REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Class B CDL with an acceptable driving record. SUPERVISION RECEIVED Under general supervision where standard practice enables the employee to proceed alone on routine work, referring all questionable cases to supervisor. COMMUNICATION SKILLS Must be able to follow oral and written instructions to complete tasks with a minimum of supervision. Ability to comprehend, record and complete route reports and work orders. Ability to communicate clearly and courteously with others in person and on two-way radio.
