General Notes This hourly, non-benefits eligible position is scheduled on an intermittent basis for Texas Performing Arts events. Additional hours may be possible for non-event shifts when needed. This position is renewed on an annual basis and contingent on performance and continued funding. About Texas Performing Arts:Texas Performing Arts is the professional arts presenting and producing program of The University of Texas at Austin. One of the largest and most active university-based performing arts centers in the U.S., Texas Performing Arts is an anchor institution in Austin's arts, cultural, and entertainment landscape. Texas Performing Arts operates venues on the UT campus including Austin's largest theater, Bass Concert Hall. Its public programs include Broadway in Austin; an international season of dance, theater, music and more; and the Texas Welcomes series of national touring artists.
PurposeAssist the Texas Performing Arts, Fabrication and Academic Production Department by producing skilled work in the fabrication, surface preparation, installation and repair of scenic elements.
ResponsibilitiesBuilding Components to Specification: Build components to specification described in drafting and drawings as well as written or verbal information.
Construction with Various Materials: Construct from wood, plastics, and metals using hand tools and power tools, including: sanders, routers, grinders, saws, and drills.
Steel Structure Layout, Welding, and Repair: Lay out, weld and repair steel structures with GMAW process.
Operating Theatrical Rigging Systems: Safely and efficiently maneuver stage equipment using counterweights and pulley systems.
Operating Aerial Work Platforms and Climbing Ladders: Safely operate aerial work platforms, such as cherry pickers or scissor lifts, to access elevated areas for construction or maintenance tasks. Climb ladders to reach heights when aerial work platforms are not available.
Instruct students: Engage with or instruct students in an educational environment.
Demonstrated commitment to safety
Rough and finish carpentry experience
Experience and familiarity with wood construction materials
Experience with power saws and pneumatic tools
Experience reading and working from technical drawings
Flexibility in project assignment
Experience on Film set or Theater production shops
CNC Experience
Experience with rigging
Welding and metalwork experience
Experience in Craft problem solving
$17.50 - $20.00, depending on qualifications
Working ConditionsStanding and walking for extended periods of time is required.
Use of manual dexterity.
