General Purpose of Job:

The Lead Phlebotomist is responsible for venipuncture, arterial-puncture, urine collection, nasal washings and nasal swabbing. Must be capable of providing quality samples for testing and correctly use computer programs relating to admission, test ordering and specimen processing. The Lead Phlebotomist functions as a resource person for other phlebotomists in the laboratory and assists in problem-solving and resolution of various ordering and collection issues. The Lead Phlebotomist should be able to demonstrate the successful collection of all specimen types. The Lead Phlebotomist is responsible for the implementation of new policies and procedure. The Lead Phlebotomists is ultimately responsible for the training and training documentation of new phlebotomy staff.

Essential Duties:

This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Associates may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.

* Helps ensure that all Laboratory Caregivers are competent in all aspects of specimen ordering and collection.

* Attend Sparrow Regional Laboratory site leadership meetings and convey information to all phlebotomists.

* Participates in the interview process for open positions.

* Ensures adequate phlebotomist coverage in the event of staff call-ins, or unanticipated volume.

* Prepares phlebotomy schedule for approval by supervisor or manager.

* Tracks data regarding number of patients, specimens, specimen types, etc. collected on a daily and monthly basis or as requested.

* Ensures monthly wait time studies are completed and submitted to appropriate personnel; may assign another phlebotomist to accomplish this.

* Ensures compliance with ISO 9000-2008 standards.

* Performs safe and efficient venipunctures on all age groups, including difficult draw patients, and patients who are under physical and/or emotional stress.

* Administers and monitors glucose-tolerance testing as needed and subsequent blood draw.

* Properly collects specimens, including the correct tubes or containers for each test, labels each specimen with the correct date, time, their initials, patient identifiers, specimen type, and correct preparation of container (e.g. 24-hour urine) as required.

* Properly collect blood cultures, nasal washings, nasal swabs and drug screens.

* Perform urine glucose for glucose tolerance testing.

* Correctly interprets physician orders, written and verbal, to ensure specimens are collected correctly.

* Correctly performs admission process, including order entry, billing, and diagnosis information, and enters into computer software systems.

* Correctly and efficiently performs all clerical duties that exist within the laboratory workflow.

* Properly prepares and mails various specimens (e.g. overnight express, US mail, etc.) as requested.

* Collects and processes Quality Assurance and Continuing Quality Improvement data.

* Follows up on corrective action as needed.

* Takes inventory and orders laboratory supplies, as well as properly dates all open reagents, or assigns a phlebotomist to perform task.

* Is aware of department and hospital policies by attending any relevant department meetings, reading appropriate meeting minutes, and reviewing hospital and department policy and procedure manuals.

Job Requirements

General Requirements None Work Experience Minimum of three years of phlebotomy experience in an acute-care, hospital-based healthcare setting with increasing levels of responsibility. Education High school diploma or G.E.D. Preferred - Successful completion of a formal phlebotomy education program; (ASCP), (ASCT), (NCA) certification Specialized Knowledge and Skills Interact and communicate effectively with supervisor, co-workers, and employees of other departments, physicians, physician's offices, visitors and patients. Must be flexible to work varied shifts when needed. Organize time to account for workload, priority, meetings and/or emergencies, and spend free time in a constructive manner. Be able to work independently. Must have excellent problem solving skills. In-depth understanding of the use of the LIS. Takes initiative and has ability to multi-task Preferred - Teaching skills
