Job Description: In this in-person residency, the visiting scholar will explore and gather the nation's Historically Black College and Universities faculty and festival makers in a program that provides the opportunity to analyze, interpret, and preserve--scholarship and the creation of regalia and performance--African diasporic Carnival practices. The visiting scholar will lead costume and collage workshops and examine the vital aspects of Black Carnival, including Mardi Gras and walking parades, as well as the organization's sustainability, cultural preservation, and diversity objectives. The scholar will focus on how heritage has influenced and contributed to the development and evolution of Black carnival traditions, highlighting their significance as acts of subversion and resistance, fostering cultural diversity, social cohesion, and artistic innovation across different regions. This nine-month appointment reports to the Chairperson of the School of Humanities. The scholar is expected to produce research or creative scholarship on campus, interact with students and faculty through workshops, critiques, and/or guest lectures, contribute to the school and university's culture, and provide regular reports, as directed by the Chairperson of Humanities, regarding program participant attendance, programming initiated and completed, and any other departmental / grant-related reporting measures.The scholar will teach one course (3 credit hours) each semester in their area(s) of specialization and at the discretion of the Chairperson of Humanities, College Dean, or Provost. The scholar is expected to use innovative and technologically appropriate approaches to engage students in learning and should be able to instruct classes using face-to-face, hybrid, and fully online modalities. The scholar is expected to publish in reputable academic journals and engage in public service at the university and the local community. Qualifications: The scholar must have a PhD in one of the School of Humanities disciplines or a closely related field and show evidence of a significant teaching and research portfolio. This position is ideal for a transformational scholar who can build on the existing strengths of the Ray Charles Program in African American Material Culture. The scholar must have experience securing extramural grants and developing successful research collaborations.
