Special Education School Assistant (full-time) ~ Temporary Position for the remainder of the 2024-25 SY.
JOB SUMMARY:
Under general supervision of the Administration, to perform instructional activities within a classroom/program designed for students with multiple physical and cognitive disabilities, mostly outside of the general education classroom; to assist in the conduct of training and learning activities with children experiencing special learning needs; to perform a variety of routine clerical and supportive activities for instructional personnel; and to do other related work as required.
Qualifications:
* High School diploma with passing score on ParaProfessional Assessment, 48 college credits or an Associate's degree.
* Appropriate English usage, punctuation, spelling, and grammar.
* Routine record storage, retrieval, and management procedures.
* Demonstrate an understanding, patient, and receptive attitude toward students of varied age groups, particularly those exhibiting specialized needs.
* Appropriately manage student behavior and guide student toward more acceptable social behaviors.
* Communicate effectively in oral and written form.
* Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
* Ability to maintain confidentiality.
* Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with children and adults.
Responsibilities:
* May perform, assist and/or train students in self-care, and personal grooming to include such activities as undressing, dressing, teeth brushing, toileting, and diapering. May adjust braces, walkers and wheelchairs. May push, lift, and transfer non-ambulatory students and assist students on and off buses. May assist students with feeding.
* Assist teachers in planning, implementing and evaluating instructional lessons, materials, strategies and materials to meet the individual and collective needs of students. Assist students individually or in groups with instructional activities, skills reinforcement activities, recreational play, supervision of field trip experiences and special programs.
* Collaborate with identified individuals (e.g. classroom teacher, school counselor, special education teacher, administrator) to support students with significant disabilities in order to be successful in the school environment.
* Assist teachers in observing and collecting data on students. Discuss observations/progress of students with instructional staff.
* Work directly with students to review or reinforce skills taught in the classroom. Implement strategies that enhance student performance and behavior.
* Help maintain an attractive, neat and safe classroom.
* Use established reinforcement techniques and appropriate discipline in responding to students' behavior.
* Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
PAY AND HOURS:
Placement on the Queen Anne's County Support Unit I Salary Schedule is commensurate with experience and preparation. This is a 10 month position with a minimum of 35 hours per week.
