NOTICE OF VACANCYAugust 14, 2023POSITION: SCHOOL COUNSELOR - COUNTY ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION PROGRAMLOCATION: Calvert Alternative School at the Career and Technology AcademyPOSITION SUMMARY: Under the direction of the school principal and supervisor of student services, the school counselor is responsible for providing a comprehensive and developmentally appropriate program to students in the area of academic achievement, career, and educational decision making, and personal/social development. The school counselor acts as a consultant in this regard to staff, parents, and the community.REPORTS TO: Assistant Principal of the Career and Technology Academy and Supervisor of Student ServicesEDUCATION, CERTIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE:At the time of application, the candidate must hold or be eligible for:
  • A Maryland Professional Eligibility Certificate, Standard Professional Certificate or Advanced Professional Certificate in the appropriate field of education; or
  • Experience as a teacher and/or counselor preferred.
  • KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS: (These are pre-employment knowledge, abilities and skills that apply to Essential Job Functions.) At the time of application, the candidate must have:
  • Knowledge of American School Counselor Association National model and School Counselor competencies preferred.
  • Knowledge of growth and developmental stages of children.
  • Understanding of and ability to maintain rapport with persons from diverse, cultural, ethnic, and racial groups.
  • Knowledge of Calvert County Public Schools policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of Calvert County Public Schools curriculum and instructional program.
  • Demonstrated ability in written and oral communication.
  • Demonstrated ability to relate effectively to students, teachers, staff, central office personnel, and community members.
  • Demonstrated success in accomplishing tasks akin to those responsibilities listed below.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Calvert County Public Schools may find appropriate and and acceptable.
  • Knowledge and ability to utilize the student information system for a variety of purposes.
  • ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS, RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
  • Implements a school counseling program that is data-driven, planned, sequential, and developmental.
  • Plans and delivers structured lessons, presentations, and services designed to meet the identified guidance and counseling competencies in areas of academic achievement, career and educational development, and personal/social development through a variety of modalities, including individual advising, large group guidance, and small group counseling.
  • Initiates individual and group sessions to address students' personal, social, and academic needs.
  • Assists students in developing decision-making skills and provides related experiences to help them attain understanding of their abilities, interests, and values.
  • Utilizes student and school data to monitor students' academic progress.
  • Collaborates with administrators, teachers, and parents to promote rigorous educational and career planning for all students that includes structured academic and career plans leading toward graduation and beyond.
  • Consults with parents and staff to appraise individual and collective student needs and interests and discusses appropriate recommendations for student educational, personal, and social growth.
  • Plans programs and services through which parents of all students will acquire an understanding of expectations, roles, and procedures for monitoring students' academic and career planning processes and progress during critical transition periods.
  • Assists with the development of the school's master schedule.
  • Assists in the articulation and orientation of students.
  • Reports and refers critical incidents that jeopardize the well-being of the student as obligated by law, Calvert County Public Schools' policies and procedures, and ethical standards.
  • Collaborates in the development and implementation of programs targeting social and emotional skills that reduce negative behaviors and increase productive and positive behaviors between and among students.
  • Assists with accurate data collection for students enrolled in the County Alternative Education Program: verifies daily attendance, adds entry/withdraw information, creates student schedules, verifies/runs interims/report cards, etc. in the student information system.
  • Communicates with students' home school counselors/registrars effectively.
  • Works collaboratively with social workers/school psychologists in creating and implementing a program of care for students.
  • Assist with transition of students to and from their home school.
  • Thinks, concentrates, and interacts positively with others.
  • Maintains regular, on-time attendance.
  • Works flexible hours as necessary.
  • Works under stress and meets all deadlines.
  • Attends special events such as open house and registration nights.
  • OTHER DUTIES: Performs related work as required or assigned by the Assistant Principal and/or Supervisor of Student Services.SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: NonePHYSICAL DEMANDS: Position requires significant periods of standing and walking and is performed in a typical school environment.UNUSUAL DEMANDS: May be subject to a flexible work schedule.FLSA STATUS: ExemptTERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Ten (10) month position and salary commensurate with qualifications and experience applied to the current Calvert County Public Schools salary schedule for teachers.
