The City of Ypsilanti is seeking a School Crossing Guard!

This is a responsible position which requires an individual who possesses the ability to amicably interact with children and have the ability to use good judgment while providing safe movement of the children to and from area school roadways or intersections.

School Crossing Guards work approximately 2 to 4 hours a day, Monday through Friday, during the public school year (September through June). Specific hours will be set by the Police Administrative Services Manager and may vary according to demand and workload.

DUTIES

-Watch for gaps in traffic and safely walk children across the roadway or intersections while holding a STOP sign in such a manner as to be visible to approaching traffic.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

A High School Diploma or GED equivalent along with the ability, knowledge and skills to meet the following:

-Knowledge of how traffic signals function

-Knowledge of basic safety practices

-Ability to stand for 1 to 2 hour intervals

-Ability to work under various weather conditions

-Ability to follow oral and written instructions

-Must have the ability to deal effectively and courteously with children, their parents

and the general public

-Must successfully complete a structured training program annually

-Ability to arrive at post on time

-Must be able to pass an extensive background check

-May not have been convicted of an offense of a Class B misdemeanor or above within the last 10 years

-May not have been, at any time, convicted of a felony or any family violence offense

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk, talk, hear and stand for up to a maximum 1 to 2 hours per shift. The employee is occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects (Stop Sign), reach with hands and arms and step up and down onto street curbs.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and distant vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORKING CONDITIONS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee works outside in all types of weather conditions. The noise level is moderately loud when exposed to various vehicle traffic ( busses, trucks, motor cycles, etc.).
