School Crossing Guards provide for the safe movement of children to and from school when crossing public roadways and intersections and leading the children across the roadway or intersection.Crossing Guards are not to engage in traffic direction or control.Crossing Guards work usually one hour in the morning and one hour in the afternoon for a total of approximately two hours per day Monday through Friday during the school year (August through June.) The hours are subject to change base upon changes in the school schedules or at the discretion of the Chief of Police.Work involves exposure to poor weather conditions, noise, dust, fumes, and other disagreeable elements. Prolonged standing and walking. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Crosses school children at correct locations by stopping vehicle traffic by holding a stop sign visible to approaching vehicles in school zones and walking children across the street in designated crosswalk. Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Work requires regular interaction involving exchange and receipt of information.This position normally performs the duty assignment after receiving detailed instructions as to methods, procedures, and desired end results with little room for deviation. The immediate supervisor may, at times, provide close and constant review.Work requires the use of standard technical skills appropriate to the work environment of the organization.Ability to distinguish colors, red, yellow, green; ability to see on-coming cars; ability to stand for prolonged periods in inclement weather; and knowledge of traffic laws.Ability to interact with the general public with a positive and friendly demeanor.The only benefits available with this position are those required by law.
