Non Instructional/Support Services Job Number 460####### Start Date Open Date 11/14/2024 Closing Date 12/05/2024 SummaryThe School Crossing Guard directs and provides the safe movement of elementary or middle school children walking or bicycling to and from school when crossing public roadways and intersections. The scheduled work time varies and it is determined by the location of the assignment. The position is part-time and generally works approximately 10 hours per week, 1 hour in the morning and 1 hour in the afternoon. School Crossing Guards without an assigned location may be asked to substitute at different locations. The position is required to wear a uniform and to work outdoors regardless of weather conditions.Essential Duties
- Reports promptly at the designated time to location of assignment.
- Directs and provides the safe and orderly movement of elementary or middle school children and pedestrians crossing public roadways and intersections; is observant at all times to ensure the safety of the children and themselves.
- Positions themselves in a highly visible and safe location, standing on the side of the street where the children approach designated crossing locations
- Monitors traffic flow to recognize traffic openings which permit them to safely step into and out of traffic.
- Places and removes caution signs and cones.
- Cautions drivers of speeding vehicles by the use of whistles, signs, hand held traffic wands, flashlights and/or hand signals.
- Notifies CMS Safety & Risk Management of hazardous roadway conditions and physical hazards.
- Clears crosswalks of rocks, glass, cans and other items in order to prevent injuries to children.
- Maintains assigned equipment (e.g. stop sigh, traffic vest, etc.).
- Keeps accurate count of children crossing the street during their shift.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
- General knowledge of North Carolina traffic regulations
- Knowledge of basic safety crossing techniques and basic safety principles and practices.
- Ability to recognize potentially dangerous traffic situations; manages and warns students in sufficient time to avoid injury
- Must have access to reliable transportation
- Ability to react quickly in emergency situations
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with children, parents, school officials and law enforcement
- Strong verbal communication skills
- Ability to remain observant, alert and diligent
- Ability to work in all weather conditions and possible hazardous traffic conditions
- Ability to stand for prolonged periods of time
- Dependability to be present at work to perform the duties of this position and punctual when reporting for duty
- Proven record of dependability and work ethics
- Ability to solve problems and de-escalate situations in a non-confrontational manner
Education and Experience
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Must be eighteen (18) years or older
- Must complete a (3) hour School Guard Safety Training annually
- Must be able to work approximately two (2) hours a day; 1 hour in the morning and 1hour in the afternoon
- Schedules will occasionally vary to accommodate early dismissals, severe weather conditions and similar events.
