This is a great opportunity for individuals with flexible schedules. As a School Crossing Guard, you will work a split shift totaling four hours per day (two hours during student arrival and two hours at student dismissal). The hiring rate for this position is $15.15/hourly with a maximum of 20 hours per week, dependent upon school calendar.Schedule:
- Part-Time/Seasonal
- August through May or June (dependent upon school calendar)
- Monday-Friday
- Split Shift (hours vary dependent upon school location)
- Two hours in the morning
- Two hours in the afternoon

- Controls and directs traffic at crossings to allow children to cross safely;
- Instructs children in the safe and correct way to cross streets and in ways to identify a potential traffic hazard
- Watch for gaps in traffic and walk children across roadway or intersection while holding a STOP paddle in such a manner as to be visible for approaching vehicles;
- Report traffic signals out of order, accidents, traffic violations and other hazardous conditions;
- Communicate positively and effectively with children and adults;
- Understand and act in accordance with the Town of Front Royal policies and procedures;
- Perform related work as required.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED
- Valid Virginia Driver's License
- Reliable Transportation
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of traffic laws and traffic patterns around school;
- Knowledge of firs aid procedures;
- Ability to control a STOP paddle effectively to provide approaching road users with a clear, fully direct view of the paddles STOP message during the entire crossing movement;
- Ability to recognize potentially dangerous traffic situations and warn and manage students in sufficient time to avoid injuries;
- Ability to exercise mature and alert judgment;
- Ability to communicate effectively with children and the general public;
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions;
- Ability to communicate specific instructions clearly, firmly, and courteously;
- Ability to work efficiently without direct supervision.
Work Environment
- Must work in adverse weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, wind) and stand for extended period of time;
- Constant exposure to traffic areas;
- Occasional exposure to unpleasant or disgruntled citizens.
Physical Demands
- Requires the ability to walk, stand, bend, reach, and lift;
- Must be able to work in all weather conditions;
- May require the occasional exertion of force up to 10 pounds to move objects.
