Salary: $15.51 HourlyLocation : Wildwood, FLJob Type: Part TimeJob Number: 091624Department: Police DepartmentOpening Date: 09/16/2024ClosingDate: 11/26/2024 11:59 PM EasternDescription ***THE CITY OF WILDWOOD CROSSING GUARD POSITION WOULD RECEIVE CHARTER SCHOOL ELIGIBILITY WITH THE VILLAGES CHARTER SCHOOL - MIDDLETON CAMPUS***Under the direct supervision of the City of Wildwood's Community Relations Sergeant, the School Crossing Guard will provide supervision and guidance at a specific location so as to provide reasonable and orderly flow of pedestrian traffic and for the safety of the general public. Crossing Guards have no law enforcement authority and may only direct traffic in conjunction with traffic laws. Crossing Guards do not have the authority to change traffic patterns Examples of Duties
- Comprehensive understanding of traffic laws and public safety
- Manage pedestrian and vehicle traffic for safe street crossing during busiest periods of the school day, including managing the safe crossing of children, cyclists, and motorists
- Excellent ability to foresee potential risk and react accordingly
- Good with communicating and interacting with children and adults of all ages
- Ensure students adhere to street crossing rules
- Utilize signs, hand signals, flags, and instincts to control car and foot traffic conditions
- Always act in a professional manner
- Required to wear appropriate uniform
- Assist children in entering and leaving school property or crossing other assigned intersections, by safely entering the road interrupting the flow of traffic. After the children have cleared the road, allow the traffic to resume normal flow
- Report any traffic violations or suspicious behavior of motorists or adult pedestrians to your supervisor
- Have knowledge of basic safety procedures and practices relevant to being a school crossing guard
- Ensure the City of Wildwood's procedures for the safe crossing of children as prescribed by the Florida Department of Transportation and the City of Wildwood Police Department are followed
- Be prepared and organized for work
- Able to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with other employees, officials, and the public
- Able to use critical thinking skills to assist with finding solutions to challenges and uses good judgment
- All other tasks as assigned
Typical Qualifications
- Applicants must be at least 18 years of age
- Must have a Florida Driver's License
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent
- Must have reliable transportation getting to and from work
- Certification through the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Crossing Guard program or ability to obtain certification
- Maintain FDOT Crossing Guard Certification
- Have never been convicted of a felony or any crime involving moral turpitude and must pass a law enforcement/school background check and drug screening
- No misdemeanor convictions involving perjury, false statement, or domestic violence within your lifetime
- Possess normal visual perception in both eyes
- Possess adequate hearing with or without hearing devices
- Knowledge of safety procedures and traffic safety principles
- Demonstrate freedom of motion of upper extremities to execute arm and hand traffic signals
- Be free of any infirmities that would prevent standing or walking at least 2 hours per day
