Position Type: Paraeducator/Paraeducator Date Posted: 5/22/2024 Location: Newmarket Elementary School Date Available: ASAP Closing Date: when filled Title: School Health Aide (Temporary Classification: Grade 4 Reports to: Assistant Principal Student Services NES FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Effective Date: 07/25/2023 Union Status: N/A Summary The Health Aide works in the classroom with students who requires health and academic services throughout the day and assists the School Nurse by performing routine health-related tasks and clerical services under direct supervision of the School Nurse to aid in meeting the health care needs of students and staff. PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: Essential Functions
  • Utilizes protocols developed by the School Nurse as a basis of care for students and staff.
  • Assists in facilitating the personal, social, and physical health of students.
  • Assists in establishing a safe and healthy learning environment.
  • Communicates effectively with members of the school district and parents.
  • Reacts to emergencies calmly; reacts to change productively.
  • Assists the teacher in implementing special strategies and interventions developed by the teacher for reinforcing material or skills based on an understanding of individual students, their needs, interests, and abilities.
  • Reinforce material initially introduced by the teacher.
  • Assist with self-help and independence skills, which may include toileting/diapering, lifting/transfers, feeding and seizure procedures.
  • Implement remedial and review exercises, practice and drill work as outlined by the teacher.
  • Care Provider
  • Follows established School procedures and protocols for care and reporting of injuries and illness.
  • Provides first aid to students and staff when necessary.
  • Administers daily and emergency medication as delegated by the School Nurse.
  • Under the direction and supervision or the building administrator, assumes authority to provide emergency care as their scope of practice allows, for ill and injured students until emergency personnel arrive if the School Nurse is not available.
  • Assists School Nurse with hygiene and personal care needs of students.
  • Conforms to standard precautions, including OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen Standards, when handling health-related situations.
  • Acts as a bus monitor for students with health needs.
  • Office Assistant
  • Assists in the daily routine of the health office under the direction of the School Nurse
  • Performs clerical work in the Health Office as designated by the School Nurse
  • Documents and maintains health records and assists with immunization follow-up under direction of the School Nurse
  • Maintains accurate records, documentation, and reports associated with the position, as requested by the School Nurse
  • Maintains stock supplies by restocking and taking inventory periodically.
  • Communications
  • Communicates health concerns to School Nurse on a daily basis.
  • Maintains confidentiality at all times in School and in the community.
  • Notifies parent/guardian of ill or injured students under the direction of the School Nurse
  • Consults with School Nurse regarding unusual or difficult situations or problems that may arise.

  • Uses standard spoken English appropriately. Including reading and comprehending passages written in English.
  • Performs other duties as delegated by the School Nurse, School Administrators and /or Director of Student Services which are consistent with the general requirements and qualifications for the position.
  • Minimum Qualifications High School diploma or equivalent. Licensed Nursing Assistant (LNA) is required. Current First Aid and CPR certification preferred. Knowledge, Ability, Skill Knowledge: Knowledge of Blood-borne Pathogens, CPR and medical care within scope of practice. Working knowledge of state child protection laws, rules and regulations and school policies regarding how to report child abuse/neglect. Ability: Demonstrated ability to communicate and work effectively with School Nurse, students, staff, and parents, able to work independently under supervision of a Building Administrator, School Nurse, or Special Education Case Manager in a wide variety of circumstances related to health and student services. Skills: Typical skills associated with scope of practice. Supervision Received: Works under the direction of School Nurse (RN) and Special Education Case Manager, Building Administration. Exercised: None Responsibility: Assists students who require health and academic services throughout the day and assists the classroom teacher School Nurse as needed. Job Environment
    • Work is performed in school setting, classroom setting, health office and related areas. May involve working outside during P.E., recess, bus monitoring or related activity.
    • Makes frequent contact with school department students and staff. May have contract with parents, the public, and outside agencies or organizations.
    • Employee has access to confidential information related to assignment.
