Job Description
Position Title: School Health Assistant
Position Type: Salaried / Non-Exempt
Position Funding Source: 281 ESSER II, 282 ESSER III (this is grant funded and will become 420 FSP funded once all grant funds are expended)
Position Hours: Full-time; Monday - Friday; 40 Hours per Week
Reports To: Campus Principal and District/Regional Registered Nurse (RN)
Length of Term/Employment: 205 workdays / At-Will
Position Mission: The purpose of the School Health Assistant is to assist the District/Regional RN in promoting the physical and mental health of Jubilee Academies' students. The School Health Assistant will assist the RN by assuming routine recordkeeping activities, providing minor first aid care, and conducting health screenings at campus level. The School Health Assistant works under the immediate guidance and direction of a licensed Registered Nurse.
Education/Certification:
* High School Diploma or GED preferred.
* Current CPR and AED course completion card.
* Unlicensed Diabetes Care Assistant training, as stated in HB 598.
Special Knowledge/Skills:
* Demonstrate organizational skills.
* Demonstrate communication skills both oral and written.
* Comprehensive knowledge of nursing techniques/ procedures, assessing illness/ injury, ethical principles/ codes of professional nursing practices, health education, wellness promotion and inventory control.
* Demonstrate knowledge in using computer software.
* Ability to implement policies and procedures.
* Knowledge of health appraisal to identify student health defects.
Experience:
* Prefer experience in the school or community health setting.
* Training as a medical assistant or other directly related medical experience is highly desirable.
* Training to administer Basic First Aid and Medications in the school setting (to include students with Asthma, Diabetes, Seizure Disorders, and other conditions presented by students enrolled on the campus).
* Training will be provided if necessary.
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
* Provide direct care utilizing professional assessment skills, the nursing process, and established school health protocols.
* Serve as health advocate for students.
* Notify parents of accident or illness and secure medical care for students in emergency cases (if parents or emergency contact cannot be reached).
* Coordinate management system to administer medications to students at school. Administer medications according to district policy and procedures.
* Establish and implement effective procedures for mandatory screening programs. Make referrals as necessary.
* Conduct annual vision, hearing acanthosis and spinal screenings.
* Coordinate with District/Regional RN for certification in vision, hearing, acanthosis and spinal cord screenings; attend certification courses at Regional Training Center.
* Enter data obtained from screenings into TxEIS.
* Document the health services provided to students in TxEIS, under the health portal.
* Data entry to include immunizations, vision, hearing, AN, and spinal screening results.
* Attend 504 meetings as requested by the department if a student has any health issues.
* Participate in development of campus health education curriculum and provide health education to individuals and groups.
* Educate faculty and staff as needed on health related topics.
* Provide health counseling and instruction to individual students.
* Review and evaluate immunization records.
* Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required, including clinic records and accurate, updated health records on all students.
* Requisition supplies and equipment needed to maintain clinic inventory.
* Comply with policies established by federal and state laws, Texas Department of Health rule, State Board of Education rule, and board policy in health services area.
* Report potential health and safety hazards to principal.
* Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.
* Perform all other duties as assigned.
