Job Title: School Nurse

Overview: Helix Community Schools is seeking an experienced School Nurse to join our team. The School Nurse will be responsible for managing and providing comprehensive health services to students across three Helix schools: Helix Mentorship STEAM Academy, Helix Legal Academy, and Helix Aviation Academy. This position plays a critical role in promoting the health and academic success of students, providing direct nursing care, and supporting health and wellness initiatives within Helix schools.
Key Responsibilities:
- Medication Administration: Administer prescription and over-the-counter medications to students in accordance with physician instructions and Louisiana state laws.
- Health Screenings: Conduct routine health screenings, including vision, hearing, and scoliosis screenings, as mandated by Louisiana regulations.
- Chronic Condition Management: Develop and manage Individualized Health Plans (IHPs) for students with chronic conditions such as asthma, diabetes, and epilepsy. Provide necessary care and monitoring throughout the school day.
- Emergency Care: Respond to medical emergencies, providing first aid and emergency care for conditions such as anaphylaxis, asthma attacks, and other urgent health situations.
- Immunization Compliance: Ensure all students are in compliance with state immunization requirements, maintaining accurate records and following up as necessary.
- Health Education and Promotion: Deliver health education programs and promote wellness initiatives to students and staff. Topics may include nutrition, physical activity, mental health, and disease prevention.
- Record Keeping: Maintain accurate, confidential student health records in compliance with HIPAA and FERPA regulations. Ensure timely documentation of all health services provided.
- Collaboration: Work closely with school administrators, teachers, parents, and community health providers to support a healthy school environment. Participate in student support teams as needed.
- Policy Development: Assist in the development and implementation of health-related policies and procedures that align with state regulations and best practices in school nursing.
Qualifications:
- Licensure: Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Louisiana.
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited nursing program is preferred.
- Experience: Minimum of 2 years of nursing experience, preferably in a school, pediatric, or community health setting.
- Certifications: Current CPR and First Aid certification required.
Skills:
- Strong assessment and clinical decision-making skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Proficient in the use of electronic health record systems and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Familiarity with HIPAA and FERPA regulations as they apply to student health information. Knowledge of state and federal health regulations for schools.
