Position Type: Student Support Services/School Nurse Date Posted: 11/18/2024 Location: Elementary - Roberts School nursing is a specialized practice that advances the well-being, academic success, and lifelong achievement and health of students. Keeping children healthy, safe, in school ready to learn is a top priority for the Health Services Department of Medford Public Schools. School nurses lead in the development of policies, programs, and procedures for the provision of school health services at an individual or district level, relying on student-centered, evidence-based practice and performance data to inform care (NASN, June 2018). Medford Public Schools nurses enhance the educational process by removing health barriers to learning through planning, implementing, coordinating, monitoring, and evaluating health services in a specific school assignment(s). Qualifications:
  • Graduate of a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing program approved by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing
  • Current, unencumbered license as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
  • Current Department of Elementary and Secondary Education license as a school nurse preferred.
  • CPR/AED certification by a recognized provider required, renewable annually.
  • A minimum of 2 years' experience in school nursing, pediatric private duty, public health, or emergency room nursing.
Performance Responsibilities:
  • Providing competent nursing care to all students using the American Nurses Association Standards of Care (2021) and theNational Association of School Nurses Framework for 21st Century School Nursing Practice (NASN, 2016).
  • Establishing and maintaining a coordinated school health program that complies with Massachusetts and local guidelines, resulations, and statutes governing nursing and school health
  • Consulting with school physician, administrators, and staff to establish, review, and revise policies, procedures, and programs for school health services
  • mplementing state-mandated health screening programs including screenings for vision, hearing, height, weight, Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT), and posture
  • Carrying out communicable disease prevention, infection control, and prevention of bloodborne pathogens
  • Developing and implementing individualized health care plans and emergency action plans, when appropriat
  • Collecting health information in a systematic, continuous, and confidential manner.
  • Providing medically prescribed interventions including medication administration
  • Responding to potential child abuse or neglect
  • Maintaining a daily log of health service activities
  • Identifying health related needs for inclusion in Individualized Education Plans or 504 accommodation plans
  • Acting as a resource in health education to students, parents, families, and school personnel and providing appropriate referrals.
