IMPROVING EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY Job Responsibilities
- Provide school health service screenings for all kindergarten entrants and new entrants to the district.
- Assist school physician with physical examinations for sports, work permits, state-mandated grade levels and CSE (Committee on Special Education).
- Verify immunization records and notify parent/guardian when updating needs to be done. Submit yearly immunization survey.
- Maintain an up-to-date cumulative health record on all students.
- Provide yearly hearing, vision and scoliosis screening on students per state requirements and referrals as needed.
- Administer medications per physician order.
- Monitor student health needs and make referrals as indicated to the appropriate sources.
- Administer first aid and emergency care to students and staff members.
- Compile Special Needs List of students maintaining confidentiality through notification of the appropriate faculty.
- Monitor and report contagious diseases for appropriate infection control.
- Monitor attendance (as per building policy).
- Serve on building Instructional Support Team and Problem-Solving Team as needed, maintaining confidentiality for cases.
- Attend faculty meetings and department meetings upon request.
- Initiate student and employee injury reports.
- Assist school physician with employee physicals.
- Provide health counseling and education for students and staff as needed.
- Maintain health office supplies (ice packs, first aid supplies, equipment).
- Maintain up-to-date reference library for pamphlets, etc. on health related issues.
- Contact parents/guardians as needed to maintain communication for health-related concerns and/or issues.
- Attend school fieldtrips as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.

QUALIIFICATIONS
- Licensed Registered Nurse
- Prior experience in the school setting preferred, but not required.

- The K-12 School Nurse is directly responsible to the Assistant Director of Counseling Student Equity, and Wellness, building principals and district leadership.
Civil Service Description SCHOOL NURSE Code No.: 4-08-197 NON-COMPETITIVE DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is a professional nursing position which involves providing emergency first aid treatment, performing screening/testing procedures, maintaining medical records and acting as a resource person in disseminating health-related information to students, parents, administrators and the faculty. This employee works under general supervision from, and reports directly to the Director of Pupil Services and School Physician. Direct supervision may be exercised over Health Aides assigned to public and non-public schools within the district. Does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES (All need not be performed in a given position. Other related activities may be performed although not listed): Maintains and updates cumulative health records for all students in the building including immunization data; Conducts scoliosis, hearing and vision screening and assists in physical examinations; Records attendance data and participates in an intervention program for recurring illness and other attendance problems; Evaluates school-related injuries and completes district insurance forms; Provides first aid and emergency treatment of injuries and illness of students and faculty; Advises parents of poor attendance, tardiness, and the need for additional medical attention; Dispenses medication as ordered by physician and requested by parent in accordance with New York State Law; Orders, inventories and oversees the storage of first aid and related health supplies and equipment; Acts as a liaison between physician, faculty, student and parents when there is a health problem; Coordinates the work of the building health aides; May be a member of the Committee on Special Education or Building Resource Team.
