The School Nurse plays a vital role in promoting the health and well-being of students within the school environment. This position involves providing direct nursing care, managing medical records, and ensuring compliance with health regulations. The School Nurse will collaborate with educators, parents, and healthcare providers to support the physical and emotional health of students.
Responsibilities
- Assess and evaluate students' health needs through regular health screenings and monitoring of vital signs.
- Maintain accurate medical records in compliance with HIPAA regulations.
- Administer medications and provide first aid as necessary for injuries or illnesses that occur during school hours.
- Develop and implement individualized healthcare plans for students with chronic conditions or special needs.
- Provide education to students and staff on health-related topics, including hygiene, nutrition, and disease prevention.
- Coordinate care with local healthcare providers and manage referrals for urgent care when needed.
- Participate in emergency response planning and conduct drills to ensure preparedness for health emergencies.
- Maintain a clean and safe clinic environment, ensuring all medical supplies are stocked and equipment is functional.
Qualifications
- Valid nursing license (RN or LPN) in the state of employment.
- Experience in school nursing or pediatric nursing preferred but not required.
- Strong knowledge of physiology, medical-surgical nursing principles, and basic life support techniques.
- Familiarity with medical records management systems and HIPAA compliance standards.
- Excellent communication skills to effectively interact with students, parents, and staff.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team in a school setting.
- Previous experience in urgent care or clinic settings is a plus.
