Position DescriptionPOSITION TITLE: School Nurse SubstituteQUALIFICATIONS:1. Must be a Registered, Professional Nurse, licensed in West Virginia.2. Must hold or be eligible for West Virginia School Nurse certification.3. Must hold or be willing to complete a BSN.4. Must have good evaluations and/or recommendations from previous employers/supervisors.5. Ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with school personnel, students, parents, and the general public.6. Professional nursing experience required, experience working with school-age children preferred.7. Ability to compile notes and write reports.8. Excellent oral and written communication skills.9. Ability to successfully carry out the responsibilities of the position.REPORTS TO: Director of Child NutritionESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:1. Provide health appraisals on children as needed or referred.2. Provide counseling for children regarding health concerns as needed or requested.3. Provide vision screening for all kindergarten students, first-time enterers and others referred by teachers, principals, or parents. Make referrals where indicated.4. Provide scoliosis screening to all seventh graders, if time permits.5. Assist in care planning at the school, helping to set up policies for care when a school nurse is not available.6. Provide materials for AIDS education and information upon request for students, teachers, and other personnel.7. Assist with immunization checks on all first time enterers (Kindergarten and transfer in students).8. Serves as a resource person for all school personnel in matters of health.9. Provide health related in-services to faculty as requested.10. Provide in-services to staff relevant to health concerns of the medical/health needs of individual students.11. Act as a referral person, cooperating with community agencies that contribute to community health and welfare.12. Works closely with the Department of Special Education in providing health appraisals, counseling concerning health matters, in-services and trainings,and acts as a resource person where indicated. Also assists to interpret medical reports concerning students where needed.13. Maintains appropriate records and documentation.14. Assists with pre-enrollment screenings with the Special Education Department.15. Provides materials on health education upon request from teachers.16. Provides specialized procedure training and follow up as needed or requested (mediation training, catherization training, etc.)17. Utilizes knowledge, education, skills and experience to plan, implement, deliver and evaluate health programs in the school system.
