Position Type: Student Support Services/School Nurse Date Posted: 6/27/2024 Location: District-wide Date Available: 08/20/2024 Closing Date: Open Until Filled General Scope of Responsibility: The responsibility of the School Nurse is to assist the child in maintaining optimum health, thereby enabling the child to function effectively and to the best of his/her ability in the learning situation. This is to be achieved through a comprehensive health program that includes health services, evaluation and interpretation of individual medical problems, immunization programs, physical examinations, hearing and vision screening, and implementation of all Board of Education policies and administrative regulations dealing with the health of children. The School Nurse works with the Head Nurse, physicians, school administrators, teachers, Pupil Services staff, counseling staff, and families in fulfilling their responsibilities. Relationship Within the School Organization: All School Nurses are directly responsible to the Head Nurse and serve under the general supervision of the principal in the building to which they are assigned and the Director of Pupil and Special Education. School Nurses shall be available for the specific responsibilities listed below and such duties as shall be assigned by the Director of Pupil and Special Education; Specific Responsibilities:
- To assist the Head Nurse, administration, and school physician in carrying out the health services program.
- To provide health service to students in the assigned school units.
- To carry out appraisal activities designed to assess the health status of all assigned students and ascertain their health needs.
- To counsel students and advise their parents regarding medical, dental, or other health treatment when it is deemed advisable.
- To serve as a resource and advisory person in providing assistance in the identification and evaluation of children with handicapping conditions in assigned school units.
- To conduct school health services including immunizations, hearing and vision tests, and any other health practices approved and directed by the Superintendent of Schools.
- To protect student health by attention to environmental health and safety factors concerning the schools and grounds.
- To provide emergency care for illness and injury occurring in school or while the student is under the jurisdiction of the school.
- To advise teachers on health matters, including screening for health problems.
- To assist the teachers in adapting the school program to meet the individual physical and emotional needs of all students.
- To maintain health records for all assigned students and to interpret these records as required.
- To prepare and submit data and reports as requested by the Head Nurse.
- To attend all staff conferences relating to health problems and services.
- To participate in In-Service programs as required by Administrative Policy.
- To requisition health supplies from the Head Nurse as needed.
- Any other duties assigned by the Head Nurse, Principal, or Director of Pupil and Special Education Services.
