Position Vacancy: School Resource OfficerStart Date: ASAP220 Days **Pre-planning to Post-planning plus 30 Days for Trainings and Junior Officer Program **Overtime availible working school events Position Title: School Resource Officer Reports to: Chief of Police / Superintendent Minimum Qualifications: 1. Certification/Licensure: Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) required; Certification as a Peace Officer must be completed prior to making application; Must hold a PBLE classification if P.O.S.T. certified after 1982 or the equivalent prior to 1983. 2. Training Council First Aid/CPR Certification preferred - must gain certification within 3 months of hire date 3. SRO Training Preferred - must gain within first year of hire date Experience: Minimum of five years of experience in law enforcement preferred GOAL:Contribute to the successful achievement of the Elbert County School District mission and major system priorities by supporting the effective organization and operation of the school environment to optimize student learning, instructional programs and related activities.REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
    • Attend school safety conferences and stay abreast of all current topics in school safety
    • Adhere to the policies and procedures listed in the Elbert County Board of Education and School Safety Policies and Procedures manual.
    • Assist with updating annually all School Safety Policies and work with all school administration to communicate safety procedures to all employees of the district.
    • Monitor and report unsafe conditions, trespassers, Code of Conduct violations, and any other suspicious activity occurring on school campus and in the parking lot;
    • Maintain high visibility at school entrances and public areas
    • Monitor student parking areas during students' arrival, during students' lunch hour, and students' departure each day;
    • Greet visitors, inquire into their business, and assist when necessary
    • Check school entrances and exits to ensure that they are secured
    • Report unsafe conditions and emergencies
    • Detain students for violation of Georgia law when the student poses an immediate threat of serious bodily injury, serious damage to property, or upon direction of the principal
    • Detain non-student trespassers for violations of Georgia law
    • Secure and maintain custody of weapons and contraband and release them to the Elbert County Sheriff's Department or Elberton Police Department
    • Coordinate investigations and activities with the Elbert County Sheriff's Office and Elberton Police Department and other local emergency agencies
    • Work collaboratively with public safety agencies to serve as a liaison between school and community to deter criminal and delinquent behavior.
    • Provide security at district and school extra-curricular events
    • Respond to emergency situations occurring on any school campus
    • Provide testimony tribunal and court proceedings
    • Comply with all training requirements for School Safety Officers
    • Act as positive role model for students
    • Work with al school administrators to address all safety concerns within each building
    • Attend all safety meetings at each school and other safety meetings within the community
    • Work with security personnel, district administration, and school administration to provide educational programs for students Pre-K-12th grade
    • Conduct courses and workshops for students, staff, and parents to promote social awareness, relationship skills, self-management, self-awareness, and responsible decision making
    • Assist with summer programs for Junior Officer Program
    • Work closely with the principal and staff of the school to foster a better understanding of the law enforcement function to maintain a secure learning environment
    • Apply for grants to assist with school safety program
    • Operate a two-way radio to communicate with school officials and other emergency officials
    • Qualify with a department approved firearm
    • Perform other duties as assigned by appropriate supervisory personnel and school administrators
