Job Description:
JOB GOALS: Provide safety and protection to students, staff, and visitors in and around the corporation school buildings. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Provide the primary law enforcement response to emergencies at Middlebury Community Schools.
  • Enforce local, state, and federal laws as required to enhance safety and security measures in and around the school buildings to include initial and follow-up investigations, enforcement of traffic and criminal laws, and prevention by high visibility and presence.
  • Presence during the normal school day, primary assigned office at Northridge Middle School.
  • Supervise after school events as required.
  • Accessibility by the Superintendent and administrators for law enforcement resource purposes during the normal business hours of the school day.
  • Regular attendance at school board meetings.
  • Provide assistance to administrators as needed to maintain order, investigate incidents of a potential criminal nature, and offer advice for resolve to various incidents.
  • Participate in building level and district level safety teams; help school administrators develop building safety plans and make recommendations based on expertise.
  • Serve on the district threat assessment team.
  • Conduct site vulnerability assessments.
  • Assist with safety drills and provide feedback from observations and complaints.
  • Monitor traffic and enforce laws as necessary on campus and around school buildings.
  • Assist with bus transportation issues as needed.
  • Keep records and documentation on all incidents that occur within their jurisdiction.
  • Create/maintain positive relationships with students, staff, and community.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
  • Graduate of the Indiana Law Enforcement Basic Academy
  • 40 hour pre-basic course prior to the Academy if not previously certified and must begin the Academy within 1 year of hire if not previously certified.
  • Receive basic and advanced certification through a certified course such as the National Association of School Resource Officer in compliance with Indiana Code if not previously certified.
  • Receive basic and advanced certification through Indiana School Safety Specialist Academy if not previously certified.
  • Bachelor's Degree (or lesser degree as approved by the Superintendent), in Criminal Justice or other approved field of safety.
  • Additional education and experience may be taken into consideration by the Superintendent but not replace required certifications by the State of Indiana.
  • Annual training hours are required to maintain law enforcement certification and are the responsibility of the Resource Officer to complete during summer months or days when school is not in session and to submit the documentation to the Indiana Law Enforcement Training Board for approval.
  • If applicable, it is the responsibility of the Resource Officer to complete the required hours of law enforcement instruction to maintain Indiana Law Enforcement Instructor certification through the State of Indiana and to submit the documentation to the Indiana Law Enforcement Training Board for approval. If a Certified Educator, the Resource Officer must follow the annual continuing education requirements.

The employee may be required to work indoors or outdoors. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 200 days per year. Salaried position.
