TITLE: School Resource Officer REPORTS TO: District Chief of PoliceSUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: NoneAPPROVAL DATE: 10/27/2022 JOB GOAL: To prevent and/or minimize dangerous situations which might result in the event of student unrest by offering assistance to delinquency prone youths and their families in support of the Safe Schools/Healthy Students project goals..ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Enforce state and local laws and ordinances.
  • Make appropriate referrals to juvenile authorities or other governmental agencies.
  • Work to prevent juvenile delinquency through close contact and positive relationships with students. In addition the SRO shall develop crime prevention programs and conduct security inspections to deter criminal or delinquent activities.
  • SRO should monitor crime statistics and work with local patrol officers and students together to design crime prevention strategies
  • Establish and maintain a close partnership with school administrators in order to provide for a safe school environment.
  • Assist school officials with their efforts to enforce Board Of Education policies and procedures.
  • Ensure school administrator safety by being present during school searches, which may involve weapons, controlled dangerous substances or in such cases that, the student's emotional state may present a risk to the administrator.
  • Assist school administrators in emergency crisis planning and building security matters.
  • Provide a course of training for school personnel in handling crisis situations, which may arise at the school.
  • Be visible within the school, the school grounds and areas surrounding the school
  • Attend and participate in school functions.
  • Build working relationships with the school's staff as well as with student and parent groups as part of the SS/HS project.
  • Report to work daily
  • Work with guidance counselors and other student support staff to assist students and to provide services to students involved in situations where referrals to service agencies are necessary.
  • Assist in conflict resolution efforts.
  • Promote the profession of police officer and be a positive role model. Increase the visibility and accessibility of police to the school community.
  • Provide instruction in character education and mentor at-risk students.
  • Provide law enforcement and police services adjacent to the school.
  • Investigate allegations of criminal incidents per policies and procedures.
  • All other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS:(1) High School diploma or equivalent.(2) Hold a valid MS driver's license.(3) Must have completed an accredited law enforcement training academy from the state of Mississippi. Must be able to complete the SRO certification course recommended by the Mississippi Department of Education within 90 days of hire. (4) Must be able to complete CPR certification within 90 days of hire.(5) Three years of experience in law enforcement(6) Must be minimum age of 24LANGUAGE SKILLSAbility to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals; Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, staff, and the general public.PHYSICAL DEMANDSWhile performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk or listen. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, reach, bend, and sometimes lift up to 25 pounds. Mobility skills are necessary to access a variety of work locations.OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.WORK ENVIRONMENTThe employee will work in an environment adhering to school board policy. This position may require work hours that vary as a result of evening activities or emergencies. In addition, job requirements may require work on weekends, holidays and attendance at meetings.
