The Registered Nurse serves as an advocate for health rights of students; consultant for health concerns of students; and promoter of sound health care practices within the school.REPORTING RELATIONSHIPReports to the School Nursing SupervisorESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provides primary health care in the school setting and serves as a direct link between health care providers, families, staff and community agencies to facilitate continuity of health care for students.
- Maintains compliance with Beyond Support Network clinical policies and procedures, NYSED policies, and New York State Department of Health requirements.
- Performs duties in a manner consistent with professional standards, professional confidentiality and other state/local statutes and/or regulations applicable to school nursing practice.
- Conduct health and wellness assessments for students per Beyond Support Network clinical policies and procedures.
- Provides first aid and clinical assessment for staff per Beyond Support Network policies and procedures.
- Notifies family or emergency contacts of changes in student's health status and evaluations.
- Documents clinic visits on Nursing Services Form, provides copy for parent.
- Follows Communicable Disease Control Procedures, informs and advises parents and/or staff regarding policy for school exclusion and readmission.
- Distributes pertinent medical information to Beyond Support Network staff to assure the health, safety and confidentiality of the students.
- Evaluates need for consult/referrals to MD, therapies, outside agencies.
- Monitors students for evidence of physical/sexual abuse and/or neglect of students and reports as mandated by law, including pictures where applicable.
- Educates families and staff through health training and literature, as needed.
- Administers and documents medications, medical testing and treatments per health care providers' orders, parental permission according to Beyond Support Network policies and procedures, State and County guidelines.
- Maintains current MD orders and parental permission and according to Beyond Support Network policies and procedures.
- Prepares a student plan of care for warranted medical conditions including but not limited to asthma, fracture, infections, seizure, and diabetes.
- Collaborates with instructional team as needed.
- Serves as a teacher/ supervisor for college nursing students/interns during the fall/spring semester.
- Tracks current physical and Immunization records for students and requests updates as needed.
- Maintains Data Base with accurate, current medical information.
- Provides Universal Precaution Protective Equipment and supplies to staff as appropriate.
- Completes accurate documentation on staff accident reports for all on the job accidents/injuries and forwards original to Human Resources.
- Monitors school environment and reports recommendations for changes to reduce health and safety hazards.
- Maintains clinical records for current students, assuring confidentiality, including locking clinic when nurses are out.
- Assures proper storage of medications in double-lock cabinet.
- Archives closed student medical records annually.
- Maintains all required documentation including session notes, nursing service form, seizure report, medication administration record, treatment record, telephone communication log, and accident and injury reports in an accurate, concise and timely manner.
- Maintains clinical supplies inventory.
- Utilizes Strategies for Crisis Intervention and Prevention (SCIP) procedures in the School Program when necessary.
- Conducts body checks on students involved in physical interventions and documents in accordance with SCIP protocol.
- Consistently complies with all agency policies and procedures.
- Constantly maintains high professional standards at work with regard to personal behavior and interactions with other staff and families.
- Performs other duties as requested by the Agency Clinical Nurse Coordinator and School Nursing Supervisor and/or Director of Education.
SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Extensive nursing knowledge of medication administration, infection control procedures, universal precaution controls, and nursing procedures
- Good interpersonal skills
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Ability to triage individuals
- Knowledge of computers including word processing and agency databases.
EDUCATION & TRAININGMinimum:Current NYS Registered Nurse or License Practical Nurse.
