The School Safety Officer will patrol the facilities, buildings, grounds and other areas of the school as directed. The School Safety Officer must have all the powers conferred by law on Police Officers in the City of Newark and be able to enforce school, state laws and the apprehension of offenders. The School Safety Officer will play an integral role in achieving the mission and goals of Newark Board of Education (NBOE) by providing all Newark's students with a safe and secure place to learn. The School Safety Officer works closely with the Senior Safety Managers and Principals to help ensure the physical safety of all district personnel and students. This position may also be responsible for other duties as required.QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS1. Applicants will be required to have a Commission issued by the Municipal Council of the City of Newark or by the State of NJ granting the authority to carry a weapon and have police authority within the boundaries of the municipality.BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIESThe School Safety Officer will support the work of the Office of Safety in a number of ways, including but not limited to:1. Shall be available to meet the needs of the department and flexible enough to work all shifts as needed.2. Restrain violent or disorderly persons who are intent on disturbing school proceedings or harming themselves and others.3. Anytime School Safety Officers need to leave their designated locations, notification is required to be made to the NBOE Security Command Center. The assigned dispatcher will then notify the assigned Network Security Supervisor.4. Remove unwilling persons from premises after issuing a verbal warning regarding a rule violation concerning disorderly conduct, loitering, or unauthorized.5. Patrol on foot, grounds adjacent to school buildings in order to detect hazards that might impact the safe arrival and departure of staff and students.6. Give verbal warnings to individuals of regulations such as those pertaining to disorderly conduct, loitering, smoking, or entry without proper passes in order to assure the enforcement of rules intended to protect the school and its occupants.7. Appear in court as a witness to testify against persons charged with vandalism, theft and other misconduct on school property.8. Patrol the immediate vicinity of the school if directed by Network Security Supervisor and assigned a vehicle.9. Seize contraband material or stolen property and detain suspects for questioning.10. Attend roll call with other school security personnel to listen to the announcement of work assignments and uniform inspection.11. Report orally and in writing to the supervisor all incidents that occur on their tour of duty.12. Respond to school wide emergency situations.13. Patrol by car if assigned and directed areas adjacent to school buildings in order to detect and deter conduct such as truancy, loitering and any other issues that might impact the safety of staff, students, and visitors.14. Stand on post and maintain orderly flow of individuals entering and leaving their assigned area.15. Collect and analyze relevant data in order to inform safety and security practices.16. Request verbal or written information from individuals pertaining to their destination, their identity and the nature of their visit.17. Patrol school corridors as directed.18. Work collaboratively with the School Security team to provide a safe and orderly environment in the school.19. Will be assigned and expected to follow a detailed written schedule.20. Perform other duties as assigned and task assigned by supervisor.KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIESThe ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate a track record of the following:1. Familiarity with New Jersey safety and emergency planning requirements.2. Exceptional critical thinking and problem solving skills, including the ability to identify challenges and actively work to find solutions.3. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build effective working relationships with school leaders, colleagues and other partners.4. Knowledge of the Newark Board of Education Policy regarding Restorative Practice.5. Knowledge of security measures in detaining persons.6. Knowledge of the procedures which are useful in making arrests and prosecuting individuals.7. Ability to follow the prescribed procedures of the Newark Board of Education.8. Knowledge of the procedures and problems in enforcing relevant laws, rules and regulations.9. Excellent written and oral communication skills.10. Salary Range: $55,600 - $67,200 (salary updated for SY 2024-2025)2. Employment Period: Twelve (12) Month3.
