School Security Employee (SSE) - Grant Funded JobID: 2135Position Type:Support Staff/SpecialistDate Posted:12/6/2024Location:Central OfficeDate Available:TBDClosing Date:01/03/2025Additional Information: Show/HideSchool Security Employee (SSE)Full Time Grant Funded 10 Month position working for QACPSThis grant-funded position is through the Maryland Center for School Safety.SUMMARY OF JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:Responsible for the safety and well-being of students, staff, volunteers, visitors, school facilities, and assets at the assigned school. Duties include the supervision and monitoring of students within and outside the school building, ensuring appropriate student behavior, communicating with students regarding issues and behavior, escorting students and authorized visitors, assisting with bus duty, lunch duty, assisting with fire drills, school safety drills, emergency action planning, other threats, and intervening in any potentially volatile situation during the school day or after school activities.PRIMARY DUTIES:* Develop partnerships with students and staff to create a safe-to-report and learning environment.* Responsible for maintaining a safe and secure school campus.* Follow directives of building and district administrators and the Coordinator of School Safety and Security.* Serve as a member of the building's comprehensive school safety plan. Work with building administrators, the Coordinator of School Safety and Security, and staff in the event of an actual crisis.* Assist building administrators with all emergency and crisis drills.* Monitor and patrol the interior and exterior of the school building and campus before, during, and after school to ensure the safety and welfare of students, staff, volunteers, and visitors and to ensure the security of school facilities and assets.* Respond to all alarms - duress, burglar, medical emergencies, etc. - with appropriate service, which may include but is not limited to calling for emergency law enforcement or medical assistance, using an AED, performing CPR, administering basic first aid, or intervening in any potentially volatile situation.* View and operate the CCTV video surveillance systems.* Communicate with school district executives and first responders to provide and receive information during emergencies.* Responsible for verifying that the exterior doors are secure throughout the school day.* Maintain safe spaces in hallways, parking lots, cafeteria, athletic fields, and/or other gathering spaces and de-escalate disturbances.* Monitor the school environment to prevent disturbances, disruptions, and suspicious activity. Assist QACPS staff members to diffuse and de-escalate threatening or confrontational situations between students and others.* Assist building administrators with student incidences, including but not limited to bullying, fights, thefts, weapons, and substance abuse.* May assist district administrators with investigations as needed.* Maintain familiarity with and enforcement of the Student Discipline Code.* Communicate with students and staff to discuss altercations, behavior, and/or progress; and to provide reinforcement of expected behavior.* Deploys various levels of intervention to ensure the safety and security of the school campus.* Assist SRO and local and state law enforcement agencies when required.* Serve as an escort for students, guests, visitors, parents/guardians, or unauthorized persons as needed.* Follow up on tips received through the Maryland Safe Schools website.* Maintain accurate and complete security records of discipline warnings, parking control, and criminal events.* Assist at other District schools as needed.* Willingness to work evenings, weekends, and summer hours as needed and approved.* Considered essential personnel and are subject to call-in during emergencies and staffing shortages.* Immediately reports to the Coordinator of School Safety and Security.* Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.Note: The above description is illustrative of tasks and responsibilities. It is not meant to be all-inclusive of every task or responsibility.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:* Education: Completion of a High School Diploma or GED from an accredited institution* Three (3) years of previous Federal, Military, State, or Local law enforcement experience with arrest powers.* Must have separated from previous law enforcement agency in good standing.* Must obtain State of Maryland School Resource Officer/School Security Employee training within 6 months of hire, as required by law.* Must possess or obtain a current Maryland Wear and Carry Handgun Permit at the time of hire.* Be able to obtain First Aid, AED, and CPR certifications within the first six (6) months of employment and maintain certifications every two (2) years thereafter;* Ability to recognize and diffuse difficult situations by taking appropriate action promptly; Ability to accept direction from school administrators, supervisors, and executive staff; Ability to be professional, courteous, and tactful with teachers, principals, citizens, and co-workers, and willing to assist the public and co-workers as needed.* Be able to operate, listen, and respond to directions from a hand-held radio;* Maintain a valid driver's license with 2 points or less;* Be able to stand or sit for long periods;* Be able to hear and differentiate multiple voices and directions to respond promptly in an emergency and for calls of assistance;* Each School Security Employee shall protect and preserve peace and good order on the property described (QACPS) in the application for the commission.* Possesses and maintains the physical stamina required for patrolling the school campus on foot.* Has demonstrated evidence of good habits in job attendance and punctuality.* Must meet approved comprehensive Criminal Background Check and drug test.Terms of Employment: Full Time 10-month position; 8 hours daily (included 30 minute paid lunch).
