This is how we live the Maya Way, even when no one is watching.Position OverviewThe School Social Worker/Clinical Counselorwill serve as a member of the Clinical Services Department, which is dedicated to working collaboratively with all school personnel (teachers, administrators, support staff), to remove the barriers which prevent scholars from accessing instruction. The worksite and tour of duty for this position is located in the DC Department of Corrections which is an adult correctional facility. RequirementsResponsibilitiesSpecific responsibilities will include but not be limited to:
  • Counseling students individually and in groups
  • Participate in IEP meetings to develop and implement IEP goals for students with special education services
  • Provide Professional Development trainings on behavioral/social/emotional challenges commonly presented by school aged students (e.g. dysregulation of emotions, attention and concentration problems, developmental delays, anxiety and withdrawn behavior, grief, family discord/separation, etc.)
  • Consult with teachers/school staff to identify and implement strategies aimed at targeting students' behavioral/social/emotional challenges
  • Maintain appropriate documentation of services provided to all students
  • Providing related services as prescribed by Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), including social skills, life skills, and transitional skills that can be transferred from school to community
  • Developing protocols for maintaining confidential clinical files and referral process to follow-up on secured data
  • Collaborating with the rest of the Clinical Services Department to recruit, select, train, and supervise graduate mental health interns from local colleges and universities
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
  • Master's degree in social work or mental health/community/school counseling. License is mandatory. If LGSW or LGPC, must have two years of working experience and be LICSW or LPC-eligible
  • OSSE certification (must be eligible upon hiring)
  • Experience working in juvenile detention/secure facilities preferred, but not mandatory
  • Experience working in community-based mental health, family health/mental health, and or public school setting
  • Must have strong skills documenting efforts and interventions
  • Must have a commitment to working from a strength-based and/or youth development perspective
Site DescriptionThe DC Jail is the adult correctional facility located in DC. Maya Angelou PCS Academy at DC Jail works with incarcerated men and women ages 18-22 who have Individualized Education Plans (IEPs). The school is located on the Central Treatment Facility (CTF), however, it serves students on the Central Detention Facility (CDF) side as well.Our mission is to provide a safe, nurturing, and mutually respectful environment that motivates and prepares each student to fulfill his academic or career potential.
