SCHOOL SOCIAL WORK INTERN
DESCRIPTION
Under the supervision of the Coordinator for Student Support Programs and Instructional Facilitator for Social Work, the School Social Work Intern will provide a continuum of social work services, including consultation, prevention, biopsychosocial assessment and clinical and macro-level interventions, to a diverse population of students. School social work interns, in collaboration with their school-based school social work field instructor(s)/supervisor(s), work with teachers, staff, administrators and families to positively impact students' academic, social-emotional and behavioral well-being.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
With support from the HCPSS Field Instructor(s)/ Supervisor(s), the School Social Work Intern:
* Collaborates with teachers, families, administrators, community providers and other professional staff to address mental health, academic, social-emotional and behavioral concerns.
* Communicates effectively using a problem-solving process to develop, implement and evaluate comprehensive and data-driven interventions to meet the needs of diverse learners.
* Completes biopsychosocial assessments to develop interventions to support students and families.
* Provides direct individual and group therapeutic interventions to students.
* Participates on interdisciplinary teams such as the Student Support Team (SST) to address student, class and school needs.
* Communicates effectively with community providers to support coordination of care for students to receive supports within and outside the school setting, including school-based mental health services.
* Collaborates and partners with families to promote and support positive home/school interactions.
* Collaborates with school-based staff and administrators to support professional learning (e.g. trauma-informed practices).
* Participates in providing crisis intervention services for students, school staff, and the school community, as needed.
* Supports data collection and participates in data discussions to inform mental health and intervention decisions pertaining to students.
* Completes required documentation of work with students and families.
* Participates in supervision meetings.
* Attends Social Work Services meetings, as schedule permits.
QUALIFICATIONS
* Current enrollment in an accredited college or university to attain a Master's Degree in Social Work (MSW)
* Completion of the first year MSW field placement
SALARY
This is an 8-month temporary position. The 8-month schedule is based on the internship schedule developed by the intern's college or university. Social Work Interns may receive an annual stipend or $2,000 depending on availability of funds through the Department of Program Innovation and Student Well-Being.

The applicant's college or university must have a current Agency Affiliation Agreement on file with the Howard County Public School System. There will be a pre-screening of applicant credentials before inviting candidates in for an interview.
