Schmidt Sciences is a nonprofit organization founded by Eric and Wendy Schmidt in 2024 that works to advance science and technology that deepens human understanding of the natural world and develops solutions to global issues. Using technology like artificial intelligence and machine learning, Schmidt Sciences accelerates research across scientific disciplines from space exploration to understanding human biology. The core focus areas of the organization include: AI and advanced computing, astrophysics and space, biosciences, climate and cross-science programs.Job Summary
    • Reporting to the Schmidt Sciences Communications Director, the Science Communications Manager will join a growing communications team to develop storytelling, messaging and visual materials that help showcase and explain the programmatic work of the organization's five focus areas. The Science Communications Manager should have an outstanding work ethic, be highly organized, and able to thrive with a highly productive schedule within a small team. A minimum of 5-7 years of relevant experience in science communications is required.
Responsibilities
    • Work with internal science teams on effective and creative message development about Schmidt Sciences programs, fellows, grantees, and staff;
    • Manage incoming communications requests from grantees, fellows, partner organizations and staff including review of messaging and ensure adherence to brand standards;
    • Assist with storytelling to communicate effectively with key audiences, including grantees, peer funders, policy-makers, media and the public at large;
    • Work with the science teams to prepare presentations and to share the organization's successes and scientific work and discoveries with external audiences, including industry presentations and events.
    • Proactively identify opportunities to engage with the public to build support for science;
    • Draft press releases, maintain press lists and develop strong contacts with science media;
    • Monitor and track communication activities;
    • Assist with the maintenance of web pages, blogs and story creation, and interactive content on the organization's website;
    • Work with the social team to assist with content development;
    • Draft collateral materials, including reports, fact sheets, newsletters, etc.
Requirements
    • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in communications, science, journalism, environmental studies, social science, or related field;
    • Five or more years of experience in science outreach, science/environmental communications, public and media relations, marketing and/or journalism;
    • Proven track record translating complex science/technical concepts into easy-to-understand language;
    • Experience working with scientists and researchers;
    • Exceptional writing and storytelling skills;
    • Professional experience managing websites, ideally using WordPress;
    • Professional experience developing content and managing social media platforms, including LinkedIn, X, Instagram and YouTube, including analytics;
    • Proficient in AirTable, Canva and Google Workspace software;
    • Superior project management experience and ability to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously;
    • Self-starter, highly motivated, hands-on professional with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively;
    • Ability to work effectively in a high-pressure, fast-paced, ever-changing environment;
    • Must be resourceful, adaptable, creative and results-oriented with high energy;
    • Attentive to detail, with highest standards for quality, accuracy and consistency.
    • National and international travel may be required.
Preferred Qualifications
    • Master's degree from an accredited college or university in communications, science, journalism, environmental studies, social science, or related field;
    • Experience working with science-focused institutions such as philanthropic or academic research institutions;
    • Experience with graphic design software, including Adobe Creative Suite and/or similar programs.
$100,000 - $130,000 a yearAt Schmidt Sciences we are committed to fair, transparent pay and we strive to provide competitive, market-informed compensation. The target salary range for this position is $100,000 to $130,000.
