Brief Job Overview

This is a non-supervisory, technical position in USPs Reference Standard Laboratory . In this role, the incumbent is responsible for designing and executing experiments supporting Reference Standards evaluations, product investigations and other relevant programs in the laboratory. This work includes development, execution and/or validation of complex analytical procedures supporting the identity, strength, and purity of the evaluated material.

The successful candidate will be recognized as a subject matter expert in Mass Spectroscopy (MS) and LC-MS with demonstrated knowledge of the technique, ability to use and maintain various instrument models, and ability to perform data interpretation. The incumbent will bring extensive knowledge and experience in a broad range of analytical techniques including liquid chromatography (HPLC), and the understanding of analytical experimental designs. They can direct, troubleshoot, and share insights on complex projects, while drawing independent conclusions about the results and determining how to proceed with the project. As well as demonstrate the ability to lead projects to completion with a high degree of scientific expertise.

The Scientist IV, RSL has the following responsibilities:

  • About 65 % of the incumbent work is expected to be at the bench level. Including actively performing testing at the bench, taking responsibility for interpreting and/or reviewing collected data, as well as ensuring the project is completed in a timely manner. They closely collaborate with other scientists and/or other USP personnel to design the most effective experimental plan, data collection and review. In this process the successful candidate:
  • Routinely applies personal experience, academic training, and technical insights including emerging sciences to solve highly complex technical problems within the laboratory.
  • Works independently and may direct others to develop and validate methodologies for the analysis of drug substances, drug products, dietary substances, excipients, and other relevant products.
  • Demonstrates solid scientific approach to analysis in the laboratory.
  • Troubleshoots difficult/unusual lab problems independently; assists others with troubleshooting.
  • Directs the planning of research and development required for all projects; reviews literature; acts as a resource to others in the planning of projects and analysis of results.
  • Executes analytical testing when assigned.
  • Works with the other team members to develop effective testing plans and experimental designs.
  • About 10% of the incumbent work would be related to the management of Mass Spectrometry instruments (routine maintenance and calibration, advising the metrology personnel, and/or assisting vendor technicians, etc. ).
  • About 15% of the incumbent work may consist of training other instrument users, mentoring staff in the proper use of the MS instruments, reviewing reports, and providing technical support within the organization when needed.
  • About 10% of the incumbent work may be related to the experimental process and related documentation (review and revising of Standard Operating Procedures, proposing process improvements, etc.).

Who is USP Looking For?

The successful candidate will have a demonstrated understanding of our mission, commitment to excellence through inclusive and equitable behaviors and practices, ability to quickly build credibility with stakeholders, along with the following competencies and experience:

Scientist IV:

  • Bachelors degree in a scientific field with Eight (8) years of relevant laboratory experience, or
  • Masters degree in a scientific field with six (6) years of relevant laboratory experience, or
  • Ph.D. degree in a scientific field with two (2) years of relevant laboratory experience.
  • Experience in a broad range of analytical techniques including liquid chromatography (HPLC), and the understanding of analytical experimental designs.
  • Mass Spectroscopy (MS) and LC-MS with demonstrated knowledge of the technique, ability to use and maintain various instrument models, and ability to perform data interpretation.

Additional Desired Preferences

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, both verbal and written.
  • Proficient with testing involving compendial methods for raw materials (USP, BP, EP, etc).
  • Knowledge of other analytical techniques and/or method development and troubleshooting.
  • Proficient in other related analytical instrumentation.
  • Skilled to lead projects and build technical expertise in RSL by serving as a role model and mentor. Experience and proven track record of introducing new or innovative technologies to the laboratory.

Supervisory Responsibilities

None. This is a non-supervisory, technical position in USPs Reference Standard Laboratory.

Compensation

Base Salary Range: USD $98,375 $124,125 annually.

Target Annual Bonus: 13%; Varies based on level of role
