Salary: $17.27 - $19.29 HourlyLocation : Appleton, WIJob Type: SeasonalJob Number: 2025-8Department: Parks and RecreationDivision: Recreation - Seasonal WorkersOpening Date: 01/02/2025Closing Date: 5/1/2025 11:59 PM CentralJob Description NATURE OF WORK:Under the direction of the Pool Manager, the Assistant Pool Manager is responsible for ensuring the safe operation of the pool facility while on duty, assuring the safety of all patrons and staff in the facility, and responding to any emergencies in accordance with training and standard of care.
- A hybrid of Lifeguard and Pool Manager positions to bridge the job functions
- Perform roles and responsibilities of both positions at specified times (detailed below)
- Aid to better prepare and train staff to advance in aquatic roles with Appleton Parks, Recreation, and Facility Management with proficiency and confidence
Examples of Duties ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Act as facility manager in the absence of a Pool Manager
- Safety and direct supervision of swimmers during all swim programming
- Instruct and/ or support various levels of swim lessons
- Listen and respond to patrons' needs for assistance and provide the public with general information, in person and/ or over the phone
- Manage and supervise assigned facility during work hours (including but not limited to security, cleanliness, and safety)
- Provide supervision of staff to ensure they are alert to all duties and adhere to City and pool policies and procedures regarding safety, health, and well-being of patrons and the facility during limited programming (morning maintenance, swim practice, swim lessons, twilight sessions, rentals) by being present on the pool deck
- Learn to develop staff schedules to include daily programming, maintenance, training, special events, and other programming
- Assist in the coordination and planning of facility maintenance procedures for before, during, and after open hours
- Complete necessary paperwork specific to job responsibilities (state mandated forms, attendance forms, accident/incident report forms, facility checklists, etc.)
- Continually train with staff on emergency action plans, including but not limited to roles and responsibilities, rescue skills, and CPR/ AED use
- Respond to emergency situations, following established emergency protocols
- Have working knowledge of the point-of-sale operating system which includes touch screen maintenance, as well as credit card and cash transactions
- Assist with supervision of daily monetary transactions and deposits at facility
- Initiate communication to management staff, including pool and concession managers, daily regarding concerns, safety, needs, successes, and functional support
- Provide leadership to facility staff
- Provide input on staff evaluations for employees
- Safety and direct supervision of facility patrons by being an active presence on the pool deck, when in charge
- Serve as a positive role model to the participants
- Encourage children to participate in activities through positive reinforcement
- Supervise special events held at assigned facility
- Perform set-up and take-down of program related equipment
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS
- Be at the facility, in uniform and ready to work, at the designated start of the work shift.
- Perform facility maintenance duties as determined by the Pool Manager, Facilities Personnel, and Recreation Supervisor
- Establish and maintain effective communication and working relationship with fellow staff members, management staff, and the public in a courteous and tactful manner.
- Maintain inventory of supplies and equipment
- Attend all required staff meetings and trainings
- Work closely with the Parks, Recreation, and Facility Management Department staff to ensure all department and City of Appleton rules, policies, and procedures are observed and enforced
- Report directly to and perform any other duties as assigned by Pool Manager and/ or Recreation Supervisor
- Train with Pool Managers in completing payroll and scheduling, running training sessions, developing evaluations, as well as becoming proficient in managing and supervising staff at the facility along with other job functions of a Pool Manager
Typical Qualifications
- Minimum of two (2) years as a lifeguard
- Current Lifeguard Training, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, and AED certifications
- Physically capable of performing and demonstrating program related activities
- Ability to operate point of sale operating system
- Have experience and/ or ability in working with money
- Strong skills in: customer service, oral and written communication, and leadership
- Ability and/ or experience to work with varied age groups, including children
- Effective decision-making skills
- Ability to take direction
- Ability to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions
- Able to work duration of the program as assigned
- Shall wear Parks and Recreation staff uniform per the City of Appleton dress code
