Salary: $25.75 Hourly Location : Public Services Building; 1150 Half Day Rd.; Highland Park, IL Job Type: Seasonal Job Number: 2024-28 Department: Public Works Opening Date: 09/09/2024 Closing Date: Continuous Description of Primary Purpose Employee is part of crew that assists with asphalt and concrete construction and maintenance in street/alley repairs: repairs pot holes; shovels and rakes asphalt; repairs sidewalks, driveway aprons, and other concrete structures; assists with mixing and pouring concrete; assists with setting forms and finishing work. Employee is part of crew that performs other maintenance work in the City's right-of-way, including restoration work following asphalt or concrete construction and/or maintenance work. Uses available tools and repair parts to repair specific problems. Performs other related job duties or responsibilities as requested or required, whether or not specifically mentioned in this job description Education and ExperienceRequired Minimum Qualifications: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Education: High School Diploma or GED equivalent. Experience: Provide proof of satisfactory past work-related experience in the Public Works or Construction Trades. One (1) year of prior municipal (or similar) work experience preferred. Certification or License: A valid Illinois Commercial Driver's License Class A or B, or equivalent. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Proficiencies: Practices and procedures for safe operation of materials, machinery, vehicles and equipment necessary for street, sewer and water distribution maintenance; occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to public works maintenance. Ability to: Read and follow work orders, use hand and power tools; follow safety precautions and recognize hazards; communicate orally and in writing; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Work Environment: Public Works normal work day operations are Monday through Friday from 7:00am to 3:30pm. This position is expected to be approximately an 1100 to 1500 hour assignment. During emergencies, employees may be required to be available during off hours. The work environment is varied with loud to very loud noise and hearing protection may be required. Most repair and maintenance work is performed in the outside and seasonal temperatures and weather conditions may vary from extremely hot, humid and dusty to extremely cold and wet. Tools and Equipment Used: The position requires the knowledge, skill and ability to operate the following equipment: construction tools and equipment including but not limited to: mechanized skid steer and breaker, air compressor and air tools (jack hammer, chisels, drills), shovels, picks, and brooms, chain saws, trimmers; hand tools, sign bucket machine, front end loaders and back hoes, trucks (pickup, 1 ton, 2-1/2 tons and 5 ton and bucket trucks), levels, rulers, lutes and rollers, back-hoe, excavators, vacuum trucks, flusher/jetter trucks, snow plows and other motorized equipment.
