Position Type: Curriculum And InstructionDate Posted: 2/24/2024Location: Suffolk Public SchoolsSecondary Division Literacy CoachGENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORKThe Secondary Literacy Coach will support all 6-12 staff in the implementation of Suffolk Public Schools Literacy Plan. Position works with the Coordinator of English Instruction (K-12). The Coach supports either middle and/or high schools by building teacher capacity and understanding of the English/language arts curriculum and instructional practices aligned to the Virginia Standards of Learning. The Coach is responsible for ensuring high-quality instruction in classrooms through modeling, co-planning, co-teaching, analyzing data, conducting classroom visits and providing non-evaluative feedback to teachers. This is not a supervisory position and does not include evaluation of colleagues.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKSThis position description is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties, knowledge or skills associated with
  • Assists with development and coordination of the division's literacy program.
  • Contribute to division-wide selection and development of curriculum resources aligned with VA Standards of Learning
  • Serves as a resource to teachers and administrators to support ELL and Dyslexia instruction.
  • Monitors the instructional program provided by English/language arts classroom teachers and provides ongoing professional learning support and coaching using the SPS aligned coaching model to help teachers improve performance and achieve literacy-related objectives;
  • Support the instructional development of teachers as it relates to Tier I instruction, student
engagement, classroom management, data review and use, and lesson plans.
  • Provides follow-up consultation and written non-evaluative feedback to teachers, monitor progress, and provide needed professional development;
  • Analyzes and uses student performance data to identify and respond to the literacy-related professional learning needs of individuals and groups of teachers;
  • Completes reports, collects data, and provides information for program monitoring as requested.
  • Continues to develop professionally by attending seminars, workshops, professional meetings, and by conducting research;
  • Attend meetings as required.
  • Performs other related tasks as assigned by the principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.
  • This is a grant funded position and is dependent on available funds.

  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students;
  • Experience working in diverse settings;
  • Deep knowledge of researched based reading, writing and literacy development, and successful implementation in a classroom environment;
  • Must be able to provide school-level leadership in regards to curriculum, pacing,and resources to support classroom instruction with a deep understanding of the progression of the knowledge, skills, and processes of education as defined in theVirginia Standards of Learning;
  • Proven ability to analyze data at the student, class, and school levels to assist teachers with developing evidence based instruction for whole and small group tailored their to student need and ultimately increase academic performance;
  • Must have extensive experience with innovative teaching techniques, instructional materials, and current trends in the area of English/reading;
  • Ability to work effectively with administrators, colleagues, central office, school based staff,students, parents and community.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Must have a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or University
  • Hold a Virginia Teaching License with an endorsement in English and/or Reading Specialist
  • Minimum five years of successful teaching experience with at least three years of teaching Reading or
English/Language arts at the appropriate grade level span;
  • Master's degree preferred
  • Instructional Leadership preferred
